Laurentian University is a medium-sized university based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1960, it offers students an exciting opportunity to learn at one of the few bilingual (English and French) universities in Canada, whilst also providing a beautiful setting, surrounded by nature, in which to learn.
The university's size ensures a real community feel and ensures that students get a fantastic education. They're served by a passionate faculty team, and smaller class sizes help to guarantee students a more tailored and personalized learning experience from that team.
The university prides itself on its bilingual status, with students able to study in English, French or a combination of both. Even students who only wish to learn in English, as they typically would at most other universities in Canada, can still benefit from the immersion in the blended language and cultures of the institution which includes Indigenous heritage.
Students can choose from a range of study programs, with several standout options available. But regardless of students' choice, they'll enjoy a supportive learning environment coupled with contemporary resources and study spaces – everything needed to promote success.
Sudbury, where the university is based, is a smaller city in Canada that's well regarded for its natural spaces, including lakes, forests and natural parks. Despite the smaller city size, the actual university campus is one of the biggest in the country in land size due to the natural spaces incorporated. Any students interested in combining their education with a love of outdoor pursuits will find that Laurentian is the perfect base.
And because Sudbury is smaller than the major Canadian cities, it is typically a more affordable option for students, with lower costs for living expenses including rent.
While the natural environment and bilingual study options are both excellent reasons to choose study at Laurentian University, arguably it's the quality of teaching that most stands out as an attraction to prospective students.
There is a wide range of study program options here, and each one is led by a faculty team of passionate educators who care deeply about helping students to succeed and find their place in their chosen career field upon graduation.
This is helped by the small class sizes that are part of a mid-sized university. There are typically around 34 students to each professor across first and second years of study programs, meaning students get more personalized support and attention through additional one-on-one time. This also frees up professors to spend more time on research, developing new ideas and information related to their field. Uniquely at Laurentian, research projects are often available at the undergraduate level, providing valuable insight into specialization and graduate studies.
And with the university's significant investment in recent years, the state-of-the-art facilities that the university offers also reinforce the quality of education provided, with students benefiting from modern learning spaces and resources.
The university is split into four faculties, each of which with an extensive range of study areas and programs that students may choose to pursue.
Within each of the faculties, there are study programs available in English or French. With a total of 114 programs, 78 are taught in English, but anyone seeking to learn in French will still find a varied selection of programs and courses across each faculty.
International students are advised to check the entry requirements for their chosen study program at Laurentian University at the earliest opportunity, so that they understand what is needed and the supporting documents required as part of the application.
The university simplifies the process by listing out the admissions requirements by country, so that students can easily understand the minimum grades required regardless of where in the world they are applying from. There are also specific requirements listed for each faculty at the university, so students can ensure that they meet the subject requirements or minimum standards for their chosen course.
Students will also be required to submit evidence of their proficiency with either English or French, depending on which language they wish to study in. A full list of accepted English test scores is provided on the university's website – as a guide, IELTS scores should average 6.5 overall with no band lower than 6.0. Students wishing to learn in French can provide documentation proving three years of full-time study at a French-speaking institution, or provide scores for TCF, TEF or DALF with a minimum C-1 score.
Prospective international students can view a full breakdown of tuition fees on the university's website. Typically, tuition fees at the university cost CAD 28,620.90 per year, but there are some study programs with higher fees – these exceptions are listed on the university's website.
Alongside tuition fees, there are other student fees that applicants will need to cover, including health insurance costs and other incidentals. Students will be given a full breakdown of the fees needed when applying, and will then be required to pay a deposit to secure their place.
A selection of scholarships is available for both undergraduate and graduate students, with high achieving international students potentially eligible for one of the most generous scholarship programs in Canada.
The best performers, based on admission averages, could benefit from up to CAD 60,000 in scholarship awards, with CAD 15,000 provided in the first year and then continued in subsequent years based on sustained grade scores.
