The Australian National University

Australia
Overview

Overview

The Australian National University (ANU) is a world-leading public research institution renowned for small class sizes and exceptional teaching and research. The university's vibrant and talented campus is located in the heart of the nation's capital Canberra, the world's 5th healthiest city to live in (Money.co.uk survey report 2021).

Ranked 1st in Australia and 30th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2023), ANU has more Nobel laureates among its staff and alumni than any other university in the country. It has around 10,000 undergraduate and 11,000 postgraduate students from across Australia and around the world.

Offering a comprehensive portfolio of degree programs, its main campus is on the land of the Australian First Nations Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples and provides a meeting place for an international learning community.

The ANU university experience gives students the knowledge and skills to lay the foundation for successful careers. They work closely with world-leading academics and explore their interests and potential through research, mentoring and hands-on learning in real-world contexts and state-of-the-art facilities.

Experiences and services include scholar communities, clubs and societies, exchange programs and internships that can earn students credit. ANU ranks 1st in Australia for graduate employability (Times Higher Education 2021).

Most students live and study in the residential community in Acton, adjacent to Canberra's central business district. They can walk or ride to their classes, libraries, gyms, swimming pools, supermarkets and cafes on campus, or head into the city to enjoy the shops, restaurants and nightlife.

On campus is a range of services for students, including medical, counselling and disability services, advocacy advice and financial assistance.

A sustainable and global student city, Canberra is vibrant, friendly and easy to get around. The city is home to the Australian Parliament and other significant cultural institutions.

E-cigarettes are harmful and addicting youth: report

E-cigarettes, or vapes, are causing harm and risk introducing a new generation to smoking, warn experts from The Australian National University (ANU) following a government report into vaping.

The major review found the use of nicotine e-cigarettes increases the risk of a range of adverse health outcomes, particularly in youth, including taking up smoking, addiction, poisoning, seizures, trauma, burns and lung injury.

"We reviewed the global evidence to support informed choices on vaping for Australia," lead author Professor Emily Banks from the ANU National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health said. "The evidence shows e-cigarettes carry significant harms.''

Culture grows social cohesion beyond economic incentives

Social enterprises looking to build social cohesion in communities may find economic logic a useful starting point in program design, but for long-term gains, they should embed programs in a cultural context, Australian National University (ANU) research has found.

College of Business and Economics researcher Dr Babita Bhatt and her team worked with 20 social enterprises that focus on community projects across Australia to examine the mechanisms each was used to foster social cohesion in their jurisdictions.

One of the most successful mechanisms researchers discovered was where social enterprises had created a community enterprise or community asset that is owned and operated not by individuals, but by the community as a collective.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

The Australian National University's focus is on providing high-quality teaching and student experience while producing excellent research that translates into meaningful products and services. Ranked as the number one university in Australia, its degrees are delivered through seven academic colleges.

Students at ANU work closely with world-leading academics who are both passionate about their subjects and experts in their fields. Together, in small classes with state-of-the art facilities and real-world industry settings, they rigorously challenge the truth through research, mentoring and hands-on learning, in person or through virtual settings online.

Many ANU alumni attribute their career success to the collaborative relationships they developed with their teachers and the opportunities they took up during their studies which helped them build networks, such as workplace internships and student exchanges.

Internationally recognised and impactful research

ANU research is rated above world-standard (Excellence in Research for Australia report 2019). It addresses the important issues of our complex world, from biodiversity, climate change, energy alternatives, food and regional security to combating disease, regulation, justice and the law, physics, engineering, humanities and the arts.

Work integrated learning

Work-integrated learning courses give ANU students opportunities to apply what they have learned during their studies in real-world settings while earning credit towards their degree. ANU offers these and other skills development programs through its colleges and international partnerships.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

ANU has monthly offer rounds. International students can apply for a single program only. They can choose the one that is best for them from the programs and courses catalogue.

To be considered for an offer, both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants must meet the prerequisite and cognate requirements for their preferred program, as well as the ANU English language requirements.

Undergraduate study

Undergraduate applicants must meet the university's minimum academic requirements for their senior secondary studies or post-secondary studies, including vocational education and training, associate diplomas or degrees or an approved tertiary preparation course. ANU also recognises one standard full-time year of study in a degree program at another Australian higher education institution or international equivalents.

Postgraduate study

Applicants for postgraduate degrees need to have completed an ANU-approved bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

English language requirements

In their application, students will need to provide evidence that demonstrates they meet the English language requirements. ANU accepts several tests, including IELTS, Cambridge C1 Advanced and TOEFL.

Application assessment process

ANU assesses applications from international students in three steps: eligibility check, rankings and outcomes and offers. The university regularly updates students about their application status and the step they need to take next.

At the outcomes and offers stage, ANU will inform students of the result of their application, how to accept an offer or how to re-apply for a future study intake.

Accommodation

Accommodation

First-semester, first-year international undergraduate students are guaranteed an offer of a room in campus accommodation. Postgraduate students can also apply to live in a student residence.

Students can indicate a preference for self-catered or catered accommodation in their application. There are numerous accommodation options to choose from, each with a diverse residential community.

All of the residences have 24-hour security, outdoor spaces, study rooms, common rooms and facilities, such as laundries, kitchens and bathrooms and living areas. They are a short walk or bike ride from shops, restaurants, public transport and other amenities.

Living on campus is a great way to adapt to university life and form friendships. Students in campus accommodation are encouraged to join in events and co-curricular activities that will help them settle into and thrive in their new home.

Support networks help students with enrolment, exams and assessments, as well as homesickness and cultural adjustments. They also provide social and wellbeing opportunities that build students' independence.
