Overview

The University of Sydney, located in Sydney, Australia, is a world-renowned institution that is consistently ranked in the top 50 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings, 2020). It is also ranked first in Australia and fourth in the world for graduate employability by the QS Graduate Employability Rankings, 2020. Students come from all over the globe to study at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Students have the choice of selecting from Australia's widest range of programmes and disciplines. Offering over 400 study areas to select from, the university has two subjects that are ranked in the top ten in the world, with an additional 30 disciplines ranked amongst the top 50 in the world (QS 2019 Subject Rankings). Career opportunities for students are enhanced through internships and work experience, as well as the option of studying abroad for part of their degree through one of the university's overseas programmes.

Students study, learn and develop in a supportive and facilitative environment with a significant number of services at their disposal. This includes academic and professional support as well as disability services, a confidential counselling service, health service, and financial assistance office. Students can also get involved with one of the more than 200 clubs and societies on campus run by the University of Sydney Union (USU), with everything from sport through to cultural groups.

There are plenty of facilities on campus for students to make use of, including a gym with a heated Olympic-size swimming pool and a rock-climbing centre. Additionally, there are art galleries, museums, cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy. Students also have access to the largest academic library in the southern hemisphere.

The student experience is enhanced and enriched by one of the world's best cities, Sydney, which has been rated as the 3rd best place to live by the Global Liveability Index 2019.

What's new

Researchers at the University of Sydney have been granted funding by the National Health Medical Research Council for a unique trial which involves both intervention and screening for obstructive sleep apnoea among older people who are at risk of dementia.

Professor Sharon Naismith from the Faculty of Science, Brain and Mind Centre, and Charles Perkins Centre has been granted AUD 1,468,684.80 for the project titled, "REducing sleep apnoea for the PrEvention of Dementia (REShAPED): a multi-site feasibility RCT". It is one of the 13 dementia research projects that was announced recently.

Led by the University of Sydney, the trial will bring together well-known experts in the area of dementia prevention, cognition, sleep, epidemiology, neuroimaging, clinical trials, health economics, neurovascular function, and implementation science.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

If English is not students' first language, they will need to offer proof of their proficiency in the language before they can commence their studies at the university.

Students can do this by offering the university proof to indicate that they have completed particular secondary or tertiary qualifications. Students can prove their proficiency by sitting for English language skills tests, or by completing suitable English language courses at the University of Sydney's Centre for English Teaching (CET).

English language skills tests which the University of Sydney accepts include:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic module
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language: paper based (TOEFL PBT)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language: internet based (TOEFL iBT)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) - Academic

University residences

The University of Sydney manages three residences on its Darlington/Camperdown Campus: Abercrombie Student Accommodation, Queen Mary Building, and the Regiment. In total, they offer rooms for about 1,600 students.

These residences offer modern single-study rooms along with large common living, study and learning spaces, as well as host student-led arts, sporting, cultural, academic, social and leadership programmes.
