Wilfrid Laurier University

Wilfrid Laurier University is a leading university in Canada with a global reputation for academic excellence. It adopts a holistic approach to higher education by blending innovative programs with opportunities for practical and professional experience beyond the classroom. Laurier graduates leave equipped with the skills they need to make their mark in the world and to succeed as professionals and academics. The university offers over 80 traditional and innovative undergraduate programs across nine different faculties on two campuses, in Brantford and Waterloo, Ontario. The campuses are within an hour’s drive of each other and are close to other major Canadian cities, as well as the United States.

Laurier’s Brantford campus is also home to the Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) Program, an academic English program for future Laurier students who don’t meet the English language proficiency requirements of their program.

Students consistently rate Laurier number one in Canada for student satisfaction due to the university’s culture of holistic learning and community focus. Laurier is a fantastically welcoming institution where students are able to actively contribute to university and community life through hundreds of societies, teams and associations. International students are central to the university’s community, with more than a thousand international students from over 80 countries welcomed each year, in addition to students in all faculties being able to go on exchange to 25 countries around the world. This knowledge and cultural exchange, as well as the life-changing relationships that students build during their time at Laurier, contribute to the university’s success in being ranked top in the country for student satisfaction, student life, extracurricular activities and residence living.

What’s new

What’s new

In the 2020 Maclean’s Rankings of Canadian Universities, Laurier ranked number one for student satisfaction, the fourth consecutive year the university have received this ranking from students. Laurier also ranked number one for Course Instructors, Student Life Staff, Extracurricular Activities, Residence Living, and Administrative Staff. Laurier is committed to providing students with an excellent academic, experiential and extracurricular experience, and the university is proud that students have such a positive experience in the institution’s classrooms, on campuses and throughout the university’s communities.

In Brantford, Laurier is developing a new academic, cultural and service space in One Market, a complex in the city’s downtown core. This new space provides Laurier with the potential to almost double its footprint in Brantford while providing students with a centralized location of student services, classrooms and study spaces. One Market is also the future site of a creativity hub, an inclusive community space that will encourage collaboration, creation and presentation of digital stories. The creativity hub will offer opportunities for experiential learning and skills development for students and will include creative studios, labs, workshop spaces and a commons area.

Laurier has announced that most classes for the fall 2020 term will be offered virtually and online, and is working to determine what programs and activities could be delivered in person, as aligned with public health guidelines. Laurier has also confirmed that first-year students will not be required to be present on campus to complete any part of their studies. To help international students plan for September and achieve their goal of attending Laurier, the university has compiled an online resource guide, as well as list of frequently asked questions. Laurier has also launched updates to Laurier 101, the virtual student support program, to provide orientation and transition support to all incoming first-year students.

Laurier traces its roots to the opening of the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary in Waterloo more than 100 years ago in 1911. It has gone through several changes since then, and in 1973 its name changed from Waterloo Lutheran University to Wilfrid Laurier University.

The university offers an exceptional range and depth of study. Students can choose from more than 100 academic programs, taught by award-winning faculty. Faculty at the university are not just people who stand in front of a lecture hall. They explore student-centred learning and collaborative teaching in active learning classrooms, taking learning beyond the classroom walls into the community. Most of them are leaders, innovators and trendsetters who work to actively engage their students, helping them to find their passion, connect with their learning material, and focus on their personal growth.

In-class learning is only part of the educational equation. Putting knowledge to work in the world is a hallmark of the Laurier experience. Experiential learning opportunities such as co-op work terms and community service are purposefully designed to help students relate what they learn in the classroom to what they experience outside of it. As a result, Laurier students graduate with both the theory and skills needed to succeed in the world that awaits them after university.

The university offer state-of-the-art facilities where students can take fitness classes, participate in intramural sports or compete in varsity athletics. Outside, Alumni Field offers a full-sized, FIFA-certified, artificial surface for both intramurals and club teams. University Stadium is home to Golden Hawk football, soccer, rugby and lacrosse.

With more than 20 different clubs available so that student can participate in a wide variety of competitive and recreational sports and activities, including men?s lacrosse, karate, ball hockey, equestrian and dragon boat racing.

Laurier?s two biggest campuses are in Waterloo and Brantford, but it also has a Faculty of Social Work in Kitchener and a weekend MBA program in Toronto. All its campuses and locations are about an hour's drive (or less) away from Toronto, Canada?s biggest city.

Waterloo campus is in the thriving, culturally diverse community of Kitchener-Waterloo (KW), located one-hour west of Toronto with a population of about 365,000. With two universities and a college, this university town is a vibrant and student-friendly city with plenty of off-campus housing, entertainment, dining and recreational opportunities. And a new light rail transit system will make it easier than ever to get around.

Shaped by its location on the historic Grand River and proximity to the major industrial and consumer markets of North America, Brantford has a thriving business community that is home to several global business operations but people are drawn to the region for so much more. A healthy arts and culture scene, world-class trails system for walking and biking, and a strong slate of festivals and events make Brantford a vibrant place to call home for residents and students alike.
