University of Portsmouth

United Kingdom

The University of Portsmouth was ranked in the world's top 150 young universities (Times Higher Education 2019), and holds a 'Gold' rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Within six months of graduating, 97.5% of students go on to find work, or are in further study (DLHE 2017).

The University is dedicated to helping students find employment, and runs a Careers and Employability Service for help with all stages of the job search, from writing a CV to finding work experience. Courses also provide work-related learning, with visits from companies and access to real-life learning environments.

The main University Quarter is made up of over 40 buildings, all of which are located around the city centre. Industry-standard facilities include a mock courtroom, model pharmacy, TV studios, creative studios and an £11 million University Library.

During their time at Portsmouth, students have the opportunity to learn another language alongside their course through the free Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP), ranging from French to Japanese. There are also plenty of clubs and societies organised by the Student's Union, where students can learn a new skill, join a sports team and get involved with charity work.

There is a wide range of help on offer for students, including a counselling service, a university doctor, and a financial support team – who give out over £5 million a year in bursaries and hardship funds.

Portsmouth is an affordable and student-friendly city, boasting a dockyard, historical sites, shops, bars, restaurants and museums that are all within walking distance of the University. Good train links also make it easy to venture elsewhere, with London just under two hours away.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

The University of Portsmouth has a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) – one of only four Gold-rated universities in the south east of England.

The TEF is the UK Government's first assessment of university teaching. A panel of experts, including academics, students and employer representatives decided the Teaching Excellence Framework awards.

The panel judged that the University of Portsmouth ''delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK.''

Students choosing Portsmouth will be studying at a highly ranked university. The Gold-rating sees the institution ranked among the top 20% of the 299 UK universities and colleges that entered the TEF.

The support that the University offers students, the industry-standard facilities, and the way Portsmouth prepares students for successful careers after graduation are major factors in the Gold rating.

A distinctive student experience and a technology inclusive approach designed to prepare students for future careers are contributing factors to the award. Students are taught by dedicated academics who are familiar with the latest developments in their industries.
