The Russell Group comprises of 24 of the UK’s top higher education institutions and promotes excellent teaching and research. They are at the top of the UK rankings, as well as some global league tables.
Founded in 1994 where the heads of 17 leading research-intensive universities began to meet together at the Hotel Russell in London - hence its name.
The aim of the organisation is to help ensure that the universities have the optimum conditions in which to flourish and continue to make social, economic and cultural impacts through their world-leading research and teaching.
Russell Group Universities are a prominent UK and international industry. Located in every major city in the UK, they have an average income of £659 million.
They produce excellent research on a grand scale, across a broad range of disciplines and have the mass of excellent research to generate huge impact. For instance, 68 % of UK’s world leading research took place in Russell Group universities. The UK is second only to Switzerland in the world and ahead of US, for the quality of its scientific research institutions.
Graduates from Russell Group universities are highly sought after by employers, both locally and internationally and they earn an average 10% more than graduates of other universities over a lifetime.
They attract the brightest minds from around the world, welcoming talented students and researchers into their diverse academic communities.35% of the UK’s undergraduates and 44% of postgraduates are from other countries. They also produce nearly 200 Nobel Prize winning academics.
They have successful and growing alumni associations across the UK and internationally. Outstanding alumni include some of the most prominent politicians in world history such as Bill Clinton and Aung San Suu Kyi ; successful entrepreneurs and business leaders, such as Danny Lui, founder of Lenovo and Cyrus Mistry, Chairman of Tata Group ; World-leading researchers, such as Zhong Nanshan, the pulmonologist who discovered SARS.
