Overview

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is one of Australia's leading universities and is recognised internationally for its exceptional learning, research and faculties. Globally, UWA is ranked in the world's top 100 (ARWU 2020) and has an excellent student to teacher ratio, is rated five-stars by the Good Universities Guide 2020 and has a five-star rating for teaching quality, facilitating meaningful teaching, learning and research.

UWA is located in Perth, Western Australia with the main campus hosting more than 23,000 students. Perth is Australia's fourth-largest city with over two million people from a variety of cultures worldwide, a strong economy and vibrant lifestyle. Perth is also one of the country's most affordable cities. Some of the reasons why Perth is such a great place for international students to study:

UWA's Perth campus hosts state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities and is one of the most beautiful in the nation. What's new

Combined bachelor's and master's (CBM)

UWA offers numerous combination degrees, that fast-track study to help students graduate with both a bachelor's and specialised master's degree in four years.

The CBM is an accelerated study option for students who excel in their performance. During the first three years, students complete a double major in their chosen discipline. This is inclusive of one semester of more advanced study which leads to one full postgraduate-level year.

Students who do not want to continue in the CBM can exit with an advanced bachelor's degree in the study area of their double major, after three years. The advanced bachelor's degree is only available to students as a CBM exit award. The combined degrees students can undertake are:

  • Agricultural Economics CBM: Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Science and Agribusiness) + Master of Agricultural Economics
  • Agribusiness CBM: Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Science and Agribusiness) + Master of Agricultural Science
  • Agricultural Science CBM: Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Science and Technology) + Master of Agricultural Science
  • Biological Science CBM: Bachelor of Science (Wildlife Conservation) + Master of Biological Science
  • Biochemistry of Nutrition CBM: Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry of Nutrition) + Master of Biomedical Science
  • Clinical Exercise Physiology CBM: Bachelor of Science (Sport Science, Exercise and Health) + Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology
  • Economics CBM: Bachelor of Economics and Master of Economics
  • Earth Sciences CBM: Bachelor of Science (Integrated Earth and Marine Sciences) + Master of Geoscience
  • Environmental Science CBM: Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science and Management) + Master of Environmental Science
  • Frontier Physics CBM: Bachelor of Science (Frontier Physics) + Master of Physics
  • Molecular Life Sciences CBM: Bachelor of Science (Molecular Life Sciences) + Master of Biotechnology
  • Marine Science CBM: Bachelor of Science (Marine Science) + Master of Marine Science

Department structure

Department structure

UWA paves the way with an innovative curriculum designed around industry and global demands. Its courses are designed to equip students with skills and knowledge to succeed globally.

Engineering

UWA is among the top ten of tech-challenger universities, according to Times Higher Education. Its study options are accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Engineers Australia, Australian Computer Society and The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine.

Business and management

UWA has one of the Asia Pacific's premier business schools and uses thought-leading research, innovative teaching and its corporate associations to provide hands-on learning, and equip students with real-world experience, and industry networking -to give them an edge in their field, on graduation.

Data and computer science

UWA's courses in information technology, business analytics, data science, and business information and logistics management are informed by the latest developments in research and industry. Students are taught in purpose-built learning facilities by world-renowned experts and put their theoretical knowledge into practice.

Science

Study options are offered in pure and applied science and new multidisciplinary fields at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students learn from staff who are international award-winning researchers and gain industry knowledge and contacts through work integrated learning opportunities.

Health and medical sciences

UWA offers courses, training and research opportunities in a range of scientific and clinical disciplines. Entry requirements

Entry requirements

English language requirements

All international applicants are required to have a recognised English language qualification such as IELTS or equivalent. They will need the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band lower than 6.0. A higher level of English is required for some courses. Students are encouraged to visit the entry requirements page on the UWA website to find out more about other approved English language tests.

Pathway options

There are several pathways through which students can enter UWA. Some students are unable to enter the university directly after completing high school in their home countries. These students are encouraged to take a pre-university course known as a foundation programme.

Undergraduate studies

Students who wish to gain entry to an undergraduate degree course must demonstrate academic performance through school-leaving qualifications or previous study. The university accepts overseas qualifications in applications for study.

Postgraduate studies

Applicants for postgraduate courses are expected to have completed an undergraduate degree at an approved university. Applicants for MPhil or doctoral programmes must demonstrate sufficient experience in research.

Scholarships and funding

Scholarships and funding

The University of Western Australia offers a range of scholarships to international students from across the globe.

Global Excellence Scholarship

High-achieving students are automatically awarded an annual tuition fee discount. When students begin study in 2022:

  • They will receive scholarships of up to AUD 36,000 over a period of three years for select undergraduate courses.
  • They will be awarded up to AUD 24,000 over a period of two years for postgraduate level.
  • They will receive up to AUD 48,000 over a period of four years, for select combined bachelor's and master's degrees or four-year undergraduate degrees.

Global Sporting Excellence Scholarship

UWA's Global Sporting Excellence Scholarship is awarded to high-performing athletes from an eligible country and commencing a course in which this scholarship is available.

When commencing studies in 2022:

  • Undergraduate students will receive scholarships up to AUD 36,000 over three years on eligible courses.
  • Postgraduate students will receive up to AUD 24,000 over two years.
  • Students will receive up to AUD 48,000 over a period of four years when studying an eligible new combined bachelor's and master's (CBM) degree or other eligible four-year undergraduate degrees.

International postgraduate scholarships

The International Master's by Coursework Scholarship programme is for those students who've excelled in their undergraduate study at an overseas institution and are looking to take up master's by coursework at UWA.

Facilities

UWA hosts state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities to provide students with an ideal learning environment.

Reid Library

Reid Library was UWA's first purpose-built library and is still the largest of UWA's five libraries. Located at the heart of the Perth campus, it has more than 2,000 study spaces, including its terrace and balcony.

Barry J Marshall Library

Named after the university's Nobel Prize-winning professor, this hub for science, engineering, mathematics and computing students and researchers has soundproofed study rooms, multimedia suites, more than 1,000 seats and a cafe.

EZONE

This is a top-notch learning space for engineering and mathematical science students that has 11 flexible teaching spaces, three science laboratories, space for 150 research students and spaces for graduates, industry, community and pre-startups.

Bayliss Building

Home to the School of Molecular Sciences, this five-storey building is a thriving centre for world-class research, with advanced labs on every level and features an impressive DNA double helix design.

Business School Trading Room

The UWA Business School hosts a world-class trading room for students at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels.

The Rosemarie Nathanson Financial Markets Trading Room is a state-of-the-art trading and analysis centre that offers access to real-time data of over 400 international markets.

Beasley Law Library

The Beasley Law Library is a modern space that offers a learning environment for research, collaboration, and study. Students enjoy access to a range of specialised databases, law journals and articles.

Guild Village

The Guild Village is the heart and soul of campus life at UWA, with cafes, student services, shops and club activities all in one spot. Services include medical care hairdresser newsagent pharmacy ATMs shoe repair key cutting and more.
