Doctor of Philosophy in Theology - Historical Theology/History of Christianity

The doctoral program in theology has as its goal the formation of theologians who intellectually excel in the church, the academy, and society. It is confessional in nature, and envisions theology as "faith seeking understanding."

Accordingly, the program aims at nourishing a community of faith, scholarly conversation, and research and teaching centered in the study of Christian life and thought, past and present, in ways that contribute to this goal. It recognizes that creative theological discussion and specialized research today require serious and in-depth appropriation of the great philosophical and theological traditions of the past, as well as ecumenical, interdisciplinary, inter-religious, and cross-cultural cooperation.

The Historical TheologyHistory of Christianity (HTHC) area studies past theological reflection on the faith and practice of the Church, with a particular focus on early and medieval Christianity. The HTHC area strives to appreciate these theological expressions both within their immediate historical contexts (social, cultural, institutional) and within the broader trajectories of theological development in the Christian tradition

University college transcripts are required from all postsecondary education institutions attended. Unofficial transcripts submitted through the online application form are acceptable for review purposes during the application process however official copies of all transcripts reviewed for admission must be submitted upon acceptance matriculation no later than July 15. Transcripts are only considered official when submitted to the MCGS Admissions Office and received directly from official academic sources ie school registrars in signed-sealed envelopes from each institution Documents uploaded attached or otherwise opened by students are always considered unofficial. Students who speak a native language other than English must provide evidence of English proficiency A score of 100 or higher on the TOEFL iBT test or 7.0 or higher on the IELTS test is required.
