Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Statistics

The next generation of leaders in mathematical and statistical science is being driven by increasingly complex global technology and challenges. The Mines Applied Mathematics and Statistics program is at the forefront of research being used to investigate and find solutions to these important questions. The growing need for mathematicians and statisticians is only expected to increase (up 24 percent from 2011 to 2024) and Mines will both prepare you for a rewarding career in a number of fields and support you post-graduation in your job search.
The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) at Colorado School of Mines prepares the next generation of mathematical and statistical scientists to be leaders in a world driven by increasingly complex technology and challenges. Our department is at the forefront of research in mathematical and statistical methods that are used to address the opportunities and challenges of the future. The AMS department offers two graduate degrees: A Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The master's program is designed to prepare candidates for careers in industry or government or for further study at the PhD level. The PhD program is sufficiently flexible to prepare candidates for careers in industry, government and academia. A course of study leading to the PhD degree can be designed either for students who have completed a master of science degree or for students with a bachelor of science degree.

Bachelor’s Degree: Required GRE: Not Required Letters of Recommendation: Required – two letters. Letters of recommendation are not required for current Mines students. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV): Required Statement of Purpose: Required Transcript(s): Required. Must be submitted for all schools attended (unofficial transcripts accepted for admissions review and must show successful completion of any required prerequisite course(s). Successful applicants are generally expected to have completed the Calculus sequence, an introductory computer programming language course (featuring C, C++, Java, Python, or Matlab), and the following mathematics courses: Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics and either Advanced Calculus/Mathematical Analysis or Introduction to Proofs. Completion of advanced mathematical coursework in Partial Differential Equations, Complex Analysis, Mathematical Modeling, Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Statistics, Numerical Analysis or Scientific Computing is also preferred. As the graduate program is quite interdisciplinary, however, AMS also encourages applicants from other backgrounds including students with undergraduate degrees in Physics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biology and Chemical Engineering, among others.
