Founded in 1971, MacEwan University has always centred students at the heart of everything it does, with a reputation for excellent teaching style and high teacher to student ratios.

Edmonton provides a high quality of life, combined with one of the lowest costs of living compared to other major Canadian cities. Accommodation costs at MacEwan are generally less than CAD 11,000 per year, with monthly cost of living estimates ranging from CAD 1,500 - CAD 2,000. The city is full of vibrant attractions and things to do, from live music to walks along the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Alberta itself is home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains which are a short drive from the university.

Student-focused instruction

Faculty provide a quality learning experience at MacEwan University and strive to put students at the core of all they do. Teachers are always accessible for support and work hard to build good relationships with their students. Most classrooms have between 10 and 50 students, and teaching staff get to know each of their students personally.

As well as teaching, staff are involved in pioneering research that's respected all over the world. Classes are informed by this research, and there are many chances for students to take part in research opportunities and ground-breaking projects.

MacEwan University offers a variety of degree, diploma and certificate programs. From health studies to the visual arts, there are many different choices. Programs lead to professional careers or further study opportunities.

MacEwan also offers professional and personal development courses, university preparation programs and English language courses. Several programs can be studied part-time. There are different start dates throughout the year.

Programs are taught across the following faculties and schools:

• Faculty of Arts and Science - Home to nine academic departments across a range of disciplines.
• Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications - Offers programs across five academic departments. It also boasts its own art gallery.
• Faculty of Health and Community Studies - Offers programs across five different departments, the faculty is renowned for teaching and research with a meaningful societal impact.
• Faculty of Nursing - Trains future registered nurses registered psychiatric nurses and other health professionals across four departments.
• School of Business - One of Canada's largest business schools, it offers courses across four academic departments.
• School of Continuing Education - Offers professional development courses and certificates to students across a range of disciplines.

• IELTS - Minimum overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.
• TOEFL - 86 iBT (internet-based) and a minimum score of 21 on all 4 sections of Reading/Listening/Speaking/Writing.
• Duolingo - Minimum score of 115.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing & Bridge to Canadian Nursing

• IELTS - Minimum overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 5.5 in Reading and Writing, 6.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Speaking.
• TOEFL - 86 iBT (internet-based) and a minimum score of 21 in Reading and Writing, 23 in Listening and 26 in Speaking.

Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing

• IELTS - Minimum overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 5.5 in Reading, 5.5 in Writing, 7.0 in Speaking and 6.0 in Listening.
• TOEFL - 86 iBT (internet-based) and a minimum score of 21 in Reading, 21
  in Writing, 23 in Listening and 26 in Speaking.

Preparatory programs

International students who don't quite meet the entry criteria can take a preparatory program. This helps them develop their English language skills and improve courses required for academic study. Programs include English as an Additional Language (EAL), Foundation Program International and University Preparation.

As well as expert teaching and academic guidance, MacEwan University has a comprehensive range of support services in place for students.

SAMU

The Students' Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is the student voice on campus. SAMU offers a range of services, student advocacy, health and dental plans, as well as a universal transit pass to help students commute around Edmonton with ease. They also organize many students' events and activities and provide support to students.

Writing centre

Those who need help with their academic skills can gain feedback on their writing. They can book appointments with a tutor and find many study resources online.

Wellness and psychological services

Students struggling with any academic or personal issue can access confidential counselling. Free and professional consultations can be in person, on the phone, or via video call.

MacEwan International student support

There's plenty of dedicated support for international students, helping them to balance the excitement of going to university far from home with the challenges of adjusting to life in a new country.

The international student services team helps international students settle into life in Canada, assisting in areas such as:

Flightpath

Flightpath is an inclusive and flexible support program designed specifically for first‑year students. The aim is to ensure that each new student has the resources and guidance to settle into their student life with confidence. Key features include:

Scholarships and bursaries are offered to international students in both degree and diploma programs. Students are automatically considered for scholarships at the time of acceptance based on academic merit.

Criteria

Students who meet the following criteria will automatically be considered for the scholarship:

• Apply for admission by the following scholarship deadline:
  Fall – March 1, Winter – July 1

International student (on a valid study permit)

• With an admission average within one of the scholarship tiers
• Admitted to a degree program in the Fall term or the Winter term.

Selection

• Entrance scholarships are based on the program students have selected and their admission average.
• If there are more qualified students than funds available, scholarships are awarded beginning with the highest averages until funds are exhausted.

Tuition and fees

Specialized Programs: CAD 32,000 - CAD 34,000

Foundation Program: CAD 16,000 - CAD 18,000

English as an Additional Language (14 weeks): CAD 6,000

Cost of living is in addition to estimated tuition and fees. Students are advised to budget CAD 1,500 - CAD 2,000 per month for general living expenses.

MacEwan's on-campus residence offers competitive accommodation pricing at CAD 8,500 - CAD 11,000 per year, and no commute!

Public Safety & Justice

The Bachelor of Public Safety and Justice offer specialized training in vocational areas such as policing, investigations, community justice, corrections, emergency communication and cybersecurity. Students can expand their perspectives by taking additional elective modules in a variety of disciplines.

MacEwan may be able to transfer the credits from previously held certificates or diplomas—whether earned here or elsewhere—to certain degrees in this department, helping students finish their program in less time.

Nursing

The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program aims to increase the number of nurses in Alberta. It is designed for internationally educated nurses who want to practise in Canada.

Upon completion, students hold the entry-level competencies for registered nurses in Alberta.

Early Learning and Child Care

The Early Learning and Child Care Diploma prepares students to become early childhood educators and care for children. Courses focus on child development, curriculum planning, positive child guidance, professional team communications, and working with families.

After the successful completion of the first two years, students obtain a Diploma in Early Learning and Child Care.

Child and Youth Care

The Child and Youth Care diploma program provides the knowledge and skills to help individuals and families navigate traumatic challenges. Students learn to build relationships with individuals and families, helping them to gain new insights, access support, and learn coping strategies.

After the successful completion of the first two years, students are eligible for Child Development Supervisor Certification from Alberta Children's Services and can work in entry-level front-line positions.

Practicum courses provide direct practice experience and are accredited through the Child and Youth Care Educational Accreditation Board of Canada.
