Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies - Latin American Religions

The graduate program in Latin American religions offers a transregional approach to the study of religion in Mexico. Specializing primarily in the history of religion in the colonial period and the early nineteenth century, we situate devotional life in New Spain at the cross-roads of the first era of globalization, a vital nodal point in a network of religious thoughts, things, and practices.
How does religion move people, ideas, and things through and across New Spain Topics studied in this program include devotional life, the history of the Society of Jesus, the history of science, and the ways in which race, religion, and gender are intertwined in theory and practice. Students interested in approaching these topics in a transregional frame are strongly encouraged to apply.
