Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering prepares graduates for careers in industry, research, and academia. Students specialize in Design/Manufacturing/Tribology, Dynamics, Control, Robotics, Neural Engineering, Simulation Driven Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Nanotechnology/MEMS, Bioengineering and Biomechanics, Energy and Sustainability, Engineering Design and Innovation, Product Development, Engineering Management and other disciplines. The MS program in mechanical engineering is designed to provide the student with advanced technical knowledge beyond what is offered in a bachelor's program and offers some exposure to research at the cutting edge of today's technology.

The MS program requires at least three-quarters of course work and the completion of a thesis or project on a research topic. It is possible for students to complete the program in as little as nine months although most students take between 12 and 15 months to complete all the requirements.

Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Those whose native language is not English must also supply Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores with a minimum of 577 or higher on the paper-based text, 233 or higher on the computer-based test, and 90 or higher on the Internet-based test. An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 also fulfills this requirement.
