The Master of Science in Materials Science with General Emphasis provides advanced study of the fundamental chemical and physical principles governing materials behavior and the general properties of materials. Topics include crystal structure, extended and point defects, atomic structure, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, crystallography, electronic and optical properties, phase transformations, and the mechanical, electrical, thermal and magnetic properties of metals, ceramics, electronic materials, composites and organic materials. The program provides an in-depth exploration of modern techniques for characterizing materials' structural, chemical, mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties, with emphasis on selecting appropriate characterization techniques for different classes of materials, understanding data interpretation, and evaluating the limitations of each method. Students may study laboratory safety and compliance, seminar and colloquium activities, and graduate level research in materials science. The program offers thesis and non-thesis options, with research and thesis in materials science available for the thesis option and research problems producing a research report rather than a thesis for the non-thesis option. Elective study may include Solid State Physics, Solid State Electronics, Nanophysics, Thin Films, Physical Chemistry of Polymers, Advanced Polymers for Electrical and Electronic Applications, and Chemical Thermodynamics.
