Roedean School was founded by the Lawrence sisters in 1885 with the aim of providing “a thorough physical, intellectual and moral” education with “as much liberty as is consistent with safety.” Established from a strong belief in equality, the school was created to challenge expectations and prepare young women to succeed at university and beyond. This founding ethos continues at Roedean today, where the school seeks to provide a distinctively academic, high-quality, all-round education within a caring and friendly community in a coastal setting. The school aims to inspire and challenge each student to develop her strengths and passions, pursue the highest academic and personal standards, and build a strong foundation for her future. It also strives to help students develop lifelong friendships, a strong sense of belonging, and pride in themselves and their school.
