Saint Louis University’s history of educational excellence spans more than 200 years. As the first university in the American West, the institution takes pride in its home in St. Louis and its Catholic, Jesuit mission.
The university began with humble origins. In November 1818, newly arrived Bishop Louis DuBourg offered classes to young men in a few rented rooms. Nearby, Vincentian seminarians pursued theological studies. A few years later, the Jesuits of the Missouri Mission assumed responsibility for operating the school. From these modest beginnings, Saint Louis University grew into a distinguished institution of higher education with a long-standing tradition of academic excellence.
