St. John's University

St. John's University is a metropolitan university based in New York City, with campuses in Queens and Manhattan, as well as international locations in Rome, Italy; Paris, France; and Limerick, Ireland.

The university's Catholic and Vincentian heritage aims to help students succeed in their chosen field of study and to become valuable members of society who make helping others a priority. There are nearly 100 undergraduate programs and 60 graduate degrees, all led by expert faculty and taught in state-of-the-art facilities, while the low student-faculty ratio of 16:1 means all voices are heard. The university has a strong network of over 200,000 alumni living worldwide.

Students can select from almost 100 undergraduate programs alongside 60 graduate degrees across a number of fields of study.

Learners can expect to be taught by faculty experts in their respective fields using state-of-the-art resources. Ninety-two percent of the full-time faculty have a doctorate or other terminal degree, ensuring their extensive knowledge. They are also experienced educators, able to take their own understanding and shape it to bring subjects to life for students.

St. John's University has six schools and colleges, each specializing in a particular area. They are:

Students are able to select from a comprehensive range of majors and programs, where they will have the opportunity to grapple with the most current challenges and questions in their field, work closely with peers and supervisors, and prepare for a successful career after graduation.

Students applying to an undergraduate program at St. John's University must submit transcripts covering four academic years of study (equivalent to U.S. grades 9-12) from their high school, secondary school, or equivalent institution, regardless of the national curriculum. Applicants must also provide any available national examination results.

While an essay and a letter of recommendation are optional for most programs, they are required for pharmacy applicants.

Transfer applicants must also submit a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member for their post-secondary studies. Students who attended a university outside the US must submit a NACES member course-by-course evaluation.

All undergraduate applicants with a gap in their education of more than three months must submit a statement of activity detailing how they spent that time.

English language

Most international students must demonstrate their English language proficiency in order to study at St John's University.

There are three pathways available to academically admissible international students:

• Students with an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or more (or an equivalent qualification) can apply for their course as normal.
• Students with an overall IELTS score of 6.0 or more (or an equivalent qualification) can apply for a full-time undergraduate degree but must also take English as a credit-bearing elective.
• Students with an IELTS (or equivalent) score lower than 6.0 can apply for conditional admission and move on to earn their academic degree upon successful completion of the English Language Institute.

Graduate

Graduate school applicants are required to submit an online application, transcripts from all secondary institutions, NACES course-by-course evaluation with grade point average calculation, and English language test results for countries not on the exempt list.

Most programs also require a resume, essay, and letters of recommendation.

St. John's University is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that support students' educational journey. Classrooms and other buildings are contemporary and comfortable, while featuring all the resources and tools students need to learn.

The Queens and Manhattan campuses are located near city bus and/or subway stops for easy commuting. These campuses offer access to vibrant neighborhoods that are linked to the rest of the city by one of the world's great mass transit systems, meaning students are easily connected to all of the sights and attractions of New York City.

St John's University boasts multiple libraries where students can access an incredible range of physical and digital learning resources, while the campus store allows students to purchase essential texts along with other necessities.

Accommodation

The university's Queens campus has several residence halls situated close to classrooms and offering a friendly community atmosphere. Support is also available for students seeking non-university housing.

Students can also enjoy an extensive range of dining options, including casual or quick-bite venues, with some national chains represented on campus.

While international students will be required to provide evidence of their ability to fund their tuition to be granted a study visa, they are still eligible for a range of additional financial aid options.

St. John's University offers a wide range of automatic and application-based scholarships to support students financially, helping them focus more fully on their academic goals.

Undergraduate Students

All undergraduate applications are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships of up to USD 36,000 at the time an admission decision is made. In addition, undergraduate students who choose to live on campus receive a USD 5,000 Explore New York scholarship.

First-year students may also apply for selective scholarship programs. The Ozanam Scholars Program is designed for students committed to leadership, community service, and social justice. Participants engage in a unique combination of academic study and community involvement, with opportunities to make an impact both locally and globally. Selected Ozanam Scholars receive an additional 10,000 USD on top of their merit-based award.

Catholic first-year applicants are eligible to apply for the Catholic Scholars Program, a four-year developmental experience that integrates faith with community service. Students in this program are awarded a USD 5,000 scholarship in addition to their merit-based scholarship.

Graduate Students

Most graduate students are considered for academic scholarship at the time of admission. The university also offers graduate assistantships that provide partial tuition and a stipend.

Students can explore the full range of scholarships and other funding options through the university's website. Payment plans are available. There are also financial aid options and funded awards available through external organizations.

Construction recently began on a new basketball practice facility on the Queens campus. This facility is part of a larger project to enhance the recreational resources on campus, which will come to include the renovation of the 20-year-old Taffner Field House into a modern recreational and wellness space for students.

The St. Vincent Health Sciences Center opened in fall 2024. The building is the second in New York City to run completely on geothermal technology and offers cutting-edge facilities. St. Vincent Hall houses the university's new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and its highly regarded physician assistant program.

The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies features centers and laboratories, including a cyber security lab and a communication and collaboration commons. In the Peter J. Tobin College of Business are several centers and institutes, including the Venture and Innovation Center, which provides students, faculty, and administrators with the resources, support, and inspiration needed to turn groundbreaking ideas into reality.

The university continues to modernize all existing facilities, an effort which was recently recognized in the Princeton Review's annual summary of the most environmentally responsible colleges. It's the only school in the New York City area to be included in the list of top 50 "green" colleges.

The annual President's Dinner is a celebration of the vibrant combination of scholarship and service. For more than 150 years, the university has been "faithful to the mission," committed to extending the opportunity for a superior academic education to deserving students regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Funds raised from the President's Dinner support scholarship assistance for students who, because of economic burdens, might otherwise be unable to realize their dream of a St. John's education. Since 1998, the President's Dinner has raised more than USD 48 million in scholarship support.
