Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts Education

Housed within the Department of Art, the Art Education program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Arts Education. The program develops artist-teachers with a strong sense of artistic thinking and practice and an engagement with the diverse cultural contexts of young people, schools, and society.
In addition to core courses addressing pedagogy, historical, and contemporary issues in art education, and art making in a range of settings with diverse audiences, the Art Education program provides students with a rigorous concentration in studio art, courses in art history, art criticism, psychology, and the social and philosophical foundations of education in the United States. Students receive a minimum of 100 hours of fieldwork in art education settings prior to entering student teaching. Fieldwork settings include area schools and the Saturday Arts Lab.
All freshman applicants in the Department of Art, including those interested in Art Education, are first accepted into the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts plan of study. After completing foundation studio coursework, students may apply to the Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts Education. Transfer applicants apply directly to the Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts Education. All Art Education students must maintain an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 for the duration of the program. A minimum grade of B- is required in all ARE (Art Education) courses; a grade of C or better is required in all ARS (Art Studio), EDS (Educational Studies) and SPE (Special Education) courses; and a grade of C- or better is required in all ARH (Art History) courses.
