Teaching English as a Second Language, Certificate

The University of Akron’s Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate is designed for native and non-native English speakers seeking to teach ESLEFL outside Ohio public schools or internationally. This fully online program builds a strong foundation in second language instruction through engaging courses in linguistics, pedagogy, and language acquisition. Whether students are starting their teaching journey or expanding their global opportunities, this certificate prepares them to make a meaningful impact in diverse classrooms.

Students who do not have English as a native language must demonstrate adequate proficiency in English with a valid TOEFL score of 550 (paper based)/213 (computer based)/79 (Internet based/iBT) or higher, or a valid IELTS score of 6.0 or higher. The awarding of this certificate is not contingent upon completion of a degree program. Graduate certificate programs require a 3.00 grade-point average.
