BA (Hons) Modern Languages and Linguistics

Applicants are typically required to have AAB at A Level, with a grade B in the advanced language they wish to study. However, it is possible to study one beginner (including post-GCSE) language without an advanced language, in which case a language A Level is not required. Accepted A Level subjects include English Language, English Literature & Language, English Literature, Modern Foreign Languages, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Philosophy, and Law. For the IB Diploma, candidates must achieve 6,6,5 at Higher Level with 32 points overall, including a Higher Level or equivalent qualification in the intended modern language if studied at advanced level. BTEC applicants must achieve DDM in the Extended Diploma, alongside BB at A Level in the required subjects. Equivalent combinations include BTEC Diploma (DD) plus BB at A Level, or BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (D) plus AB at A Level, with required subjects included. Independent language diplomas such as DELF-B2 (French), DELE-B2 (Spanish), Goethe-Zertifikat-B2 (German), DILI-B2 (Italian), and TRKI 2nd Certificate (Russian) may be considered as evidence of advanced language proficiency when taken in addition to three A Levels or equivalent qualifications. These diplomas must meet the CEFR B2 standard and may be pursued independently or via a language centre.
