Undertake research that has real-world benefits with our Primary Care research degree. You’ll explore clinically relevant topics in collaboration with academics, clinicians and experts by experience. Multi-disciplinary research with strong NHS and National Institute for Health and Care Research partnerships provides an inspiring environment for postgraduate researchers.
Introduction
The Institute of Population Health conducts internationally acclaimed research and collaborates with communities to understand how biology, behaviour, environment, policies, and technology impact physical and mental health.
Research is supported by colleagues working in health and social care, experts by experience and members of the public. We have a long and successful history of research links with NHS services and are extremely well placed to help develop the clinical research expertise of our postgraduate researchers across a range of settings.
Our work is theoretically robust, and problem and policy focused. We have a research agenda that’s socially relevant and postgraduate teaching that’s truly research led. The Department of Primary Care and Mental Health is home to expertise and ongoing research, using both quantitative and qualitative methods, systematic reviews and clinical trials in a variety of community, primary and secondary care contexts. Examples of our current work include the management of musculoskeletal problems and cardiovascular disease in primary and intermediates, as well as the use of orthoptic and vision services.
Research topics
We particularly welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduate researchers interested in:
Chronic conditions and multimorbidity
Primary care and community mental health

Other areas of research within the department include:
Global mental health
Cardiovascular diseases and hypertension
Children and families
