Undergraduate Certificate in Languages, Cultures and Translation: Translating Japanese-English

A Certificate in Translating represents a theory-based skill developed at the bachelor’s degree level. It is, however, not the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree. The Certificate may complement a major in any field, and is especially recommended for Majors and Minors in French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, International Studies, or International Business. To earn the Certificate in Translating Japanese-English, students must complete a sequence of four translation courses or 12 credit hours. They take one course (3 credit hours) in the Theory and History of Translation, which is taught in English. In addition, they take three Practicum in Translation courses (9 credit hours) from Japanese into English. All courses must be completed with a Grade of B or better.

Students should have graduated from an approved or accredited high school or have earned a high school equivalency certificate or G.E.D. The high school course units should include the following: 4 units in English, emphasizing grammar, composition and literature; 4 units in mathematics, including Algebra I, Algebra II and geometry, and a higher level mathematics course for which Algebra II is a prerequisite; 2 units in social studies, including one unit in U.S. history; and 3 units in science, including at least one unit in a life or biological science (e.g., biology), at least one unit in a physical science (e.g., chemistry, physics, physical science), and at least one laboratory course; two additional academic units of English, Mathematics, science, social studies, world languages or computer science.
