Why do diseases develop How do medicines work What molecular processes allow living organisms to grow, adapt and survive Biochemistry helps answer some of the most important questions in science by exploring life at the molecular level.
Biochemistry BSc (Hons) investigates the chemical processes that underpin living systems, helping you understand how biology, chemistry and physics work together to influence health, disease and the function of cells and organisms. You'll develop a scientific understanding of the mechanisms that drive life while exploring how this knowledge can be applied to real-world challenges.
A key strength of the course is its interdisciplinary approach. You'll study a unique blend of subjects including biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, physiology and chemistry, building a broad scientific foundation that allows you to understand biological processes from multiple perspectives.
Throughout your studies, you'll explore topics such as protein interactions, molecular structure and biological function, developing insight into how molecular changes can influence health and contribute to disease. As you progress, you'll have opportunities to specialise in areas including thermodynamics, molecular geometry and the medical and industrial applications of biochemistry.
Practical experience plays an important role in the course. Through application-focused learning, you'll strengthen your analytical and scientific skills while developing experience of how biochemistry is used in professional settings. Collaborations with the life sciences sector and opportunities to engage with global specialists provide valuable insight into current scientific developments and industry practice.
The programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, recognising the quality of its scientific content and the subject knowledge, technical abilities and transferable skills it develops.
By graduation, you'll have developed a strong understanding of molecular science alongside practical, analytical and problem-solving skills that can support opportunities across bioscience, biotechnology, healthcare, research and related scientific fields.
