Climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and sustainable resource management are among the most important challenges facing society today. Environmental scientists play a vital role in understanding these issues and developing solutions that help create a more sustainable future.
This degree combines physical geography, biology, ecology, chemistry and earth sciences to help you understand how natural systems function, how human activities influence the environment and how scientific evidence can inform positive change. You'll explore environmental issues from multiple perspectives and develop the knowledge needed to assess and respond to real-world challenges.
You'll study a range of topics before choosing whether to specialise in particular areas of interest or continue with a wider programme of study. This allows you to shape your degree around your interests and future ambitions.
Through laboratory work, field-based activities and scientific investigation, you'll develop the skills needed to collect, analyse and interpret environmental data. Visits, fieldwork opportunities and an optional overseas residential field trip allow you to apply your knowledge in a variety of real-world settings.
Alongside scientific knowledge, you'll strengthen your quantitative and analytical skills through the use of data analysis techniques including statistics, geographical information systems, remote sensing and evidence-based approaches. These skills can help prepare you for your future career and enable you to approach environmental challenges in a systematic and informed way.
The programme is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences, ensuring high educational standards, enhancing student employability and providing a clear pathway toward professional chartership. All students receive free membership offering a fast-track route to professional membership after graduation and offering networking opportunities, career resources and preferential access to internships.
By graduation, you'll have developed practical field, laboratory and analytical skills alongside a strong understanding of environmental processes and sustainability challenges, preparing you for opportunities across environmental management, conservation, sustainability, research, policy, charity and related sectors.
