Video games combine technology, creativity and problem-solving to create immersive experiences enjoyed by millions of people around the world. If you're fascinated by how games work and want to learn how to build them yourself, this course will help you develop the programming skills and technical knowledge needed to bring your ideas to life.
Games Programming BSc (Hons) focuses on the development of computer games, from the core principles of programming through to the creation of complex interactive experiences. You'll learn how games are designed, developed and optimised while gaining an understanding of the technologies that power modern games development.
Practical learning is at the heart of the course. Through a strong "theory put into practice" approach, you'll apply your knowledge in state-of-the-art computer laboratories, building both technical confidence and hands-on development experience. As your skills develop, you'll work with industry-recognised tools and technologies used across the games sector.
You'll explore a wide range of specialist areas, including games programming, computer graphics, artificial intelligence techniques, simulation, game technologies and development for game engines such as Unity and Unreal. Alongside technical development, you'll learn about idea generation, planning, problem-solving and the wider commercial considerations involved in taking a game from concept to launch.
The course also provides opportunities to engage with activities beyond the classroom, including national game competitions and internship opportunities. These experiences can help you apply your skills in different contexts and develop a better understanding of the industry.
By graduation, you'll have developed practical programming expertise, creative problem-solving abilities and a strong foundation in games development. You'll also gain transferable software development skills that can support opportunities not only within the games industry but across a wider range of computing and technology careers.
