People with learning disabilities can face barriers to healthcare, education and everyday life. As a Learning Disability Nurse, you'll help break down those barriers, advocate for individuals and support people to live healthy, independent and fulfilling lives.
You'll develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide person-centred care across a wide range of health, education and social care settings. Through a combination of theory, practical learning and placements, you'll learn how to support people of all ages with diverse needs while working alongside their families, carers and multidisciplinary teams.
At Northampton, you'll gain experience in a variety of placement settings, including specialist services, helping you understand the different environments in which Learning Disability Nurses make a difference. You'll be supported throughout your studies by experienced nursing academics, practice partners and a dedicated Personal Academic Tutor.
You'll also benefit from embedded Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, further enhancing your ability to support people's wellbeing. Through simulated learning, practice experience and reflective development, you'll build the communication, leadership and decision-making skills needed for contemporary nursing practice.
As you progress, you'll develop the resilience, professionalism and confidence to work collaboratively across health and social care services, supporting people with learning disabilities to achieve the best possible outcomes and quality of life.
Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), this degree leads to eligibility for professional registration as a Learning Disability Nurse. The combination of academic knowledge, practical experience and professional preparation will help you begin a rewarding career making a positive difference to people's lives.
