Great coaches not only improve performance but they inspire confidence, support development, build relationships and create positive environments where athletes and participants can achieve their potential. Whether working with beginners, young athletes or in high performance sport, coaches play a vital role in positive sporting experiences.
This degree is designed to develop the knowledge, practical expertise and professional skills needed to become an effective and adaptable coach. You’ll explore how athletes learn, develop and perform while understanding coaching across a range of sporting environments.
You will develop expertise in planning, delivering and evaluating coaching programmes. You’ll study coaching practice, skill acquisition, sport pedagogy, athlete development, coaching science, performance analysis, and the psychological and social factors that influence coaching and performance. As you progress, you’ll have opportunities to tailor learning to your interests and career goals.
A key strength of the programme is its focus on the coaching process and long-term athlete development from a multidisciplinary perspective. You’ll examine the coach-athlete relationship and explore how communication, leadership, learning and evidence-informed decision making contribute to effective coaching environments.
Through coaching practice, work-based learning and professional development activities, you’ll apply theory in real-world settings while developing the practical, interpersonal and professional skills valued by employers.
The course benefits from links with local and professional sport, including Northampton Saints, Northampton Town FC and Northampton Swimming. You’ll also access to specialist facilities, including a dedicated performance analysis laboratory supporting observation, video analysis and evidence-informed coaching practice. These links, facilities and staff expertise help you engage with the coaching industry and build your professional network.
By graduation, you’ll have developed coaching expertise, critical thinking skills, professional experience and a strong understanding of athlete and coach development. This supports careers in sport coaching, performance analysis, coach development and education, sport development, performance environments and related roles in the sport industry.
