At Eastman we foster a community of passionate and talented students who possess the self-discipline and intellectual curiosity to succeed in music. We develop not only students’ performance abilities, but also their academic and practical skills. This major is designed for students seeking careers in jazz performance or jazz writing and arranging. The Jazz department offers a major in performance skills on the following instruments: trumpet, saxophone, trombone, piano, guitar, double bass, drumset, and jazz voice. Writing skills applicants must audition on and maintain proficiency on one of the above instruments. The strength of Eastman’s Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media degree program lies in the hard work expected of each student in every aspect of study, coupled with the individual attention received from faculty. The sheer scope of material covered in the curriculum sustains the discipline level, while the faculty members as mentors provide personal encouragement as the coach the necessary skills.
