Chemical Engineering is a profession in which knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biology, and other natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop economical ways of using material and energy for the benefit of mankind. The program required for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BSChE) provides fundamental instruction in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. This education prepares the graduate to seek employment in petrochemical, pharmaceutical, healthcare, microelectronics, polymers, energy and environmental industries. In addition, the graduate is well-prepared to pursue graduate school. The Biomedical & Biomolecular Track allows students to tailor their degree to include training in bio-related coursework andor laboratory experiences. Chemical engineers are already well-positioned to pursue careers in pharmaceuticals, biological processing, bioremediation, biofuels, or advanced graduate or clinical degrees. Topics of study can include the study of biological processes, cell signaling, design of biomedical or clinical devices, biosystems, bioproducts, pharmaceutics, and others. Including the Biomedical & Biomolecular Track in the plan of study allows students to gain additional exposure to these topics, and may be of particular interest to students wishing to pursue a clinical degree, such as MD, DO, or PharmD, or an advanced graduate degree (MS or PhD) as the Biomedical & Biomolecular Track, by design, automatically meets the requirements for Pre-Med status provided the General Education courses selected include Introduction to Psychology (PSY 120) and Introductory Sociology (SY 109).
