Artificial Intelligence and Adaptive Systems (with an industrial placement year) MSc

In the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the study of intelligent and adaptive systems is essential. On this course, you’ll develop a strong understanding of the field through areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, consciousness and cognitive science. By studying at Sussex, you’ll: • benefit from our unique, historic strength of interdisciplinarity between AI, cognitive science and neuroscience • develop a comprehensive understanding of intelligence and adaptive behaviour in both artificial and living systems • explore the theory and mathematical foundations of AI and machine learning • develop techniques for designing and implementing artificial systems in practice • learn from experts at the forefront of their fields. Based within our Department of Informatics, you’ll join a thriving community of research excellence. We’re home to leading research hubs including Sussex AI, the Data Science Research Group and the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science. This course provides a strong foundation in AI, with modules in mathematics for complex systems, machine learning and adaptive systems. From there, you can choose to organise your studies around one or more subdisciplines: • robotics, autonomous systems and artificial life • machine learning and natural language processing • computational biology, cognitive science and consciousness science. You’ll also refine your technical report skills through select modules and your MSc project.

You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should be in a scientific or technical subject or other discipline (including computing and cognitive subjects) demonstrating either numeracy or computer literacy. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
