A small graduate program size allows for more student-faculty contact, resulting in a more personalized and intensive experience. The UTSA Art Department faculty all have outstanding exhibition records as part of major museum collections. Students explore a myriad of mediums and styles, and have the full resources of the art faculty and facilities to reach their artistic potential.
The Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in Art is the terminal degree in the field of studio art. UTSA is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The emphasis of the M.F.A. program is on conceptual development and its harmony with formal aesthetic and art historical considerations. The objective of the degree is to provide advanced study in the field of art in preparation for a career as a practicing artist, in higher education, or as a professional in other art enterprises. Students in pursuit of the M.F.A. in Art have the opportunity to study in a wide range of disciplines including: ceramics, painting/drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video/digital media.
Philosophically the sculpture program is guided toward a liberal exploration of the medium. The emphasis is on the professional practice of being an artist and a sculptor. Therefore students spend most of their time mastering the mental and physical skills needed to conceive, develop, and fabricate a body of artwork. The studio environment and facility are intended to provide students the opportunity for research and exploration of the medium for artistic expression. No particular style, aesthetic or theoretical approach is stressed over any other. While command of the material, and knowledge of its history and tradition are fundamental, students are also encouraged to experience other disciplines and integrate those practices into their sculptural work. The students are expected to be artists, who want to make a professional commitment to a career in the arts.
