Master of Science in Mathematics - Mathematics Education

The MS in Mathematics offers opportunities for specialization in a number of areas, including Mathematical Biology, Mathematics of Computation, Data Analytics, Differential Equations, Model Theory and Foundations, Operator Theory, Optimal Control, Post-Quantum Cryptography, Mathematical Physics, Quantum Theory, Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis. The Mathematics Department is research-intensive. Faculty research is funded by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and fellowships from Fulbright and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
The Department of Mathematics offers Master of Science degrees in Applied Mathematics-Industrial Mathematics, Mathematics, and Mathematics Education.
The Mathematics Education concentration is the only graduate degree of its kind in the city of San Antonio. It offers a strong preparation in mathematics for secondary and college teaching, as well as an introduction to experiences in the breadth of mathematics education research. The mathematics requirements of this program certify graduates to teach dual-credit or college-level courses, while the mathematics education courses allow students to engage in rigorous mathematics that connects to the needs of K-12 mathematics teachers (including K-5 mathematics supervisors and middle/secondary teachers). All required courses in the program are offered during nights, weekends, or summer to accommodate the busy schedules of in-service teachers. Career opportunities for students in mathematics education include teaching in public and private secondary schools, teaching in community colleges and universities, conducting educational research, and educational consulting.
