Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Quantitative Ecology and Resource Management

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is based on proficiency in statistical inference, ecological modeling, and resource management, and upon a superior ability to carry out important and independent research, as demonstrated by the successful completion of a doctoral dissertation. It is distinguished from the M.S. degree by greater rigor and depth of research and scholarship. A doctoral degree requires a minimum of 90-quarter credits earned over a period of at least three years and completion of a dissertation. The QERM core coursework must be taken if the student obtained a master’s degree from another institution.

Applicants must complete the following required coursework by December 31 of the year they submit their application or their application will not be considered: College-level calculus (ordinary differential equations, integration, Taylor series, and applications); Linear Algebra; Statistical Inference. Additional advanced coursework in mathematics, probability, statistics (400-level coursework). Minimum 3.00 GPA in last 60 semester or last 90 quarter credits. Competitive applicants typically take advanced coursework or have work/research experience spanning at least two of the following quantitative areas: mathematics, statistical inference and modeling, mathematical probability, optimization and at least one of the following areas: biology, ecology and evolution, or resource management.
