Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university, organized into five Schools. The mission of the institute is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the twenty first century. It seeks to develop in each member of the MIT community the ability and passion to work wisely, creatively, and effectively for the betterment of humankind.
Current research and education areas at the institute includes digital learning, nano technology ,sustainable energy , the environment, climate adaptation, and global water and food security, Big Data, cyber security, robotics, and artificial intelligence, human health, including cancer, HIV, autism, Alzheimer’s, and dyslexia, biological engineering and CRISPR technology, poverty alleviation, advanced manufacturing, and innovation and entrepreneurship. MIT offers 53 undergraduate major and 58 minor programs.
In 1916, the institute relocated from Boston to Cambridge, where the campus now extends more than a mile along the Cambridge side of the Charles River. The heart of the campus is a group of interconnecting buildings, designed by architect W. Welles Bosworth , that facilitate interaction and communication among MIT’s schools and departments. For students, the campus has 18 residence halls, each with its own distinctive personality and community.
