From Australia to New Zealand: IDP Student - Magnolia’s Journey

Magnolia spent five years studying in Australia before recently moving to New Zealand

For Magnolia, studying abroad has always been about more than just earning a qualification. It has been a journey of growth, independence, and discovering new perspectives.

Originally from Indonesia, Magnolia spent the past five years studying and three years working in Australia. During that time, she became curious about what life and education in New Zealand could offer.

“I spent the past five years studying and three years working in Australia,” Magnolia shared. “While I was there, I had always been curious about New Zealand. Now that I have the opportunity, I am excited to continue expanding my knowledge there.”

Why Magnolia chose to study in New Zealand

For Magnolia, choosing New Zealand was a chance to experience something new while continuing to build on the international experience she had already gained.

“I chose to study in New Zealand because I see it as a great chance to experience a new environment while continuing my education,” she said. “I’m really interested in learning about different cultures and perspectives, and I believe studying in New Zealand will give me that balance of academic growth and personal exploration.”

How IDP supported her study journey

Overcoming visa application challenges

Like many international students, Magnolia faced challenges during her visa application process, particularly when preparing and submitting documents.

“Of course, there were challenges along the way, particularly when it came to preparing and submitting all the required documents for my visa application,” she shared. “It was quite overwhelming at times, but with persistence and determination, I managed to get through it and provide everything that was needed.”

Magnolia’s goals in New Zealand

Despite the challenges, Magnolia stayed focused on her long-term goals. She hopes the knowledge and experience she gains in New Zealand will help her contribute to her family business in the future while also opening doors to new professional opportunities.

“During my studies, my goal is to gain knowledge that I can later apply to support my family business,” she explained. “After that, I would love to explore working opportunities in New Zealand, if possible, and experience what professional life is like there.”

Stepping outside her comfort zone

For Magnolia, studying abroad is also about personal growth and stepping beyond familiar surroundings.

“In terms of my career, I see this as a personal challenge and an opportunity to grow,” she said. “I want to step out of my comfort zone, gain international experience, and develop both my skills and confidence.”

Magnolia’s advice for other international students

When asked what advice she would give to other students considering studying overseas, Magnolia kept it simple but encouraging:

“Just keep going. It might feel hard, but it’ll be worth it in the end.”
