The main medicine pathways in Australia are undergraduate medicine and postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) programs. Undergraduate pathways usually accept students directly from high school, while postgraduate MD programs require you to complete a bachelor’s degree first before applying.
Please note that in Australia, "Doctor of Medicine" typically refers to a graduate pathway.
However, some universities also name their undergraduate program the same and accept students studying medicine directly after high school. For example, the University of Queensland's and the University of Sydney’s Doctor of Medicine programs accept both Year 12 and undergraduate students.
This guide focuses specifically on the graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine (MD) pathway for international students.
Entry requirements for studying medicine in Australia can vary depending on your pathway. The requirements in this article are focused on the Doctor of Medicine (MD) pathway for postgraduate students.

We can help you compare pathways and universities based on your GPA, GAMSAT scores, background, and long-term goals to help you apply more strategically.
Know your MD program options
The main exam used by graduate-entry medical schools is the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT), although some universities may also accept the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for eligible international applicants applying from overseas.
Your application is typically assessed based on a combination of:
Your GAMSAT score
Your academic results (GPA)
Your English test results (such as IELTS)
Your interview (MMI) performance (if shortlisted)
If you’re applying for the Doctor of Medicine program for 2027 intakes, it’s important to align your GAMSAT timing with application deadlines.
Here are the key dates to keep in mind:
Dates | What happens |
|---|---|
Mid March 2026 | GAMSAT |
Late May 2026 | Results released for the March GAMSAT sitting |
April - May 2026 | Most university applications open |
June 2026 | Most university applications close |
May - July 2026 | GAMSAT or MCAT results submission |
August - September 2026 | Interview invitations and MMIs |
September 2026 | GAMSAT |
October - December 2026 | MD offers released |
November 2026 | Results released for the September GAMSAT sitting |
January 2027 | Additional offers to fill vacancies |
January - February 2027 | MD program commencement |
The GAMSAT is held twice a year, in March and September. If you're an international student, it's important to plan your university applications, GAMSAT registration dates, and even your visa timeline early so everything aligns smoothly.
Now is a good time to shortlist universities, prepare your documents, and understand which MD pathways best match your scores, GPA, and timeline.
Plan your MD application
Our IDP counsellors can help you compare MD pathways, organise requirements, and plan your next steps early so you don't miss important application deadlines.
Plan your MD application
Applying for a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Australia follows a clear sequence. The key is to align your GAMSAT timing with university application deadlines and be ready with your documents before results are released.
Universities will assess your bachelor’s degree, GPA, prerequisite subjects, English scores, and GAMSAT or MCAT eligibility.
Most MD programs require the GAMSAT, while some universities may accept the MCAT for eligible international applicants applying from overseas.
You may apply through GEMSAS, directly through the university, or with your IDP counsellor to fast-track your application.
Universities may require transcripts, admissions test scores, identification documents, and enrolment evidence.
Applicants are usually shortlisted based on GPA, GAMSAT or MCAT scores, and other university requirements.
Shortlisted applicants may be invited to attend a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).
Successful applicants may receive unconditional or conditional offers depending on their application status.
We can help you check your eligibility, compare MD pathways, organise documents, submit applications, prepare for IELTS, and stay on track with important deadlines.
Strong applicants often miss out not because of low scores, but because of timing and application strategy.
Prepare your application before your GAMSAT results are released
Doctor of Medicine applications usually open in May, very close to when March GAMSAT results are released. If you wait until results are out, you may rush key steps like shortlisting universities or preparing documents.
Plan your GAMSAT sitting based on your application timeline
Not all GAMSAT sittings can be used for every intake.
If you sit the GAMSAT in March 2026, you can use those results for 2026 applications for a 2027 commencement
If you sit the GAMSAT in September 2026, you can use those results for 2027 applications for a 2028 commencement.
GAMSAT results are valid for up to 4 years, so you can also sit the test while still completing your bachelor’s degree.
Understand that MD requirements vary between universities
Some universities require specific science prerequisites.
Some place stronger emphasis on interviews.
Some heavily weigh GPA or GAMSAT scores.
Some universities use GEMSAS, while others require direct applications.
This means a profile that is competitive for one university may not automatically be competitive for another.
Choose your university preferences strategically
If you apply through GEMSAS, your application is assessed in order of your university preferences. If your GAMSAT results are not competitive for your first preference, your application moves to the next preference, and so on. However, once you decline an offer, you will not receive another offer for that university through the system. This is why your preference list should balance:
your target universities
your competitiveness
location preferences
pathway fit
long-term goals
After completing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Australia, international graduates usually move through several stages before exploring long-term migration pathways.
Step 1: Complete your internship and registration
After graduating, you will usually complete an internship in a hospital or healthcare setting. This helps you progress towards general registration through Ahpra and supervised medical practice in Australia.
Step 2: Apply for post-study work rights
Many graduates may become eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which allows eligible students to stay and work in Australia after graduation.
Our migration experts at IDP can apply for a post-study work visa and plan your long-term study-to-migration journey.
Step 3: Gain work experience and explore sponsorship opportunities
After an internship and registration, you may continue working in hospitals or healthcare services across Australia. Some doctors later become eligible for employer-sponsored pathways depending on their role, experience, and work location.
Step 4: Explore skilled migration and PR pathways
Doctors are commonly included on Australia’s skilled occupation lists, which may create future permanent residency opportunities through pathways such as:
Eligibility depends on your occupation, experience, English level, and current migration requirements.
Small decisions early in the process can shape your MD application outcome. Knowing when to sit the GAMSAT, which universities to prioritise, and how competitive your profile is can help you avoid delays and apply more strategically.
