What do “intake dates” in Australia mean?

Intake dates simply mean the start of academic semesters in Australia. While it commonly refers to universities’ admission cycles, it can also refer to the start dates for Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions, and English Language Program (ELICOS) providers.

What are the intake dates in Australia 2026?

The main intakes in Australia are divided into three: February (Semester 1), July (Semester 2), and November (Semester 3).

Main intake dates for onshore international students in Australia

Below is a quick overview of the key intake dates and how they usually work for students in Australia.

  • February intake (main intake) - The largest intake and the start of the academic year. This is the most popular choice for students finishing Year 12 or completing their course at the end of the year. It offers the widest range of courses and the most scholarship options.

  • July intake (second major intake) - The second biggest intake. While there are fewer options than February, many universities still offer strong choices, especially for postgraduate courses and popular fields like IT and science.

  • November intake (limited intake) - A smaller and more limited intake. It can be a good option if you want to start sooner and do not want to wait until next February, but course availability is more restricted.

Onshore application deadlines: other things you need to know

  • Priority rounds – Some universities send offers before their application deadlines. If you're assessed in a priority round, you may receive an offer before the official deadline for applications.

  • Rolling assessments – Many universities process applications as they arrive instead of waiting for the deadline. This means that if you apply early, you can get faster outcomes and even early access to scholarship consideration.

  • Waitlisting - If a course reaches capacity, your application may still be reviewed, but you’ll be placed on a waitlist until a spot opens.

  • Deadline extensions – Standard programs sometimes receive extended deadlines, especially if there is still a spot available after the initial cut-off. However, competitive or quota-based courses rarely offer extensions once they close.

  • Deadlines for Genuine Student (GS) documents and acceptance - Aside from application deadlines, universities also set last dates for submission of Genuine Student (GS) documents, and acceptance of offer and payments.

  • Application deadlines may vary per program - Most universities set different last dates of application for different programs.

Late acceptance policies for onshore international students

Some Australian universities allow late offer acceptance for Semester 1, but this depends on your course and available places.

What to know:

  • Late acceptance is course-specific, not guaranteed.

  • The usual deadline for Semester 1 intake is by December of the last year, but some universities offer extended deadlines for onshore students up to February or March.

  • As an onshore student, you may have more flexibility than offshore applicants because you are already in Australia on a valid visa, which can allow universities to process your enrolment and issue a CoE more quickly, with fewer travel or visa-related delays.

  • Popular courses can close without notice once places fill.

  • Faster action is often required for documents, payments, and CoE issuance.

Deciding on which intake date to apply for

Here are some considerations to keep in mind when finalising your study plans next year:

  • Course availability: Check if your preferred course is offered in that intake.

  • Transition time from current studies: If you're finishing Year 12, a VET course, or a pathway program, choose the intake that matches your completion timeline, so there’s no long study gap.

  • Timing and personal schedule: Consider things like ATAR rechecks, finishing TAFE, or any commitments that might delay your start.

  • Visa expiry and extension timing: Check when your current student visa ends. You need a new CoE to apply for your next visa. If your next intake starts too far in the future, you might not get your CoE early enough to lodge your new visa before your current one expires.

  • Scholarship deadlines: Many scholarships only open for Semester 1. If funding support matters to you, this can influence your intake choice.

When you have all these factors considered, the next thing that might help you decide is knowing the potential benefits and disadvantages of each intake date.

Australia intakes 2026: Pros and cons of each

February intake in Australia

Best for

  • Students who want the widest choice of courses and a full academic-year start.

Pros

  • Most course options: Almost all programs open in February.

  • Better timing for work and internships: Many internships and graduate pathways align with early-year starts.

  • Simple study progression: You begin at the start of the academic year, so subject sequencing is straightforward.

  • Stronger campus life: Biggest intake means larger orientations, clubs, and events.

Cons

  • Higher competition: Popular courses fill quickly.

  • Shorter break: Less downtime if you finish studies at the end of the year.

July intake in Australia

Best for

  • Students who need more time to prepare or are finishing a course mid-year.

Pros

  • Extra preparation time: Useful if you finish a diploma or pathway in May–June, or need time for English tests or documents.

  • Easier course changes: Good for students switching institutions, changing courses, or applying for credit.

  • Less competition: Fewer applicants compared to February.

Cons

  • Smaller orientations: Fewer large-scale campus events.

  • Subject availability varies: Some units only start in Semester 1, so your study plan may adjust.

November intake in Australia

Best for

  • Students who missed earlier intakes or need more time for visas and paperwork.

Pros

  • Flexible timing: Lets you start sooner without waiting until next February.

  • Helpful for delays: Works well if your CoE, visa, or English results take longer.

  • Good pathway option: Common for ELICOS, foundation, and some postgraduate courses before a February intake.

  • Smaller classes: Can mean more personalised support.

Cons

  • Limited course choices: Not all universities offer November starts.

  • Quieter campus: Fewer students and activities.

  • Different academic structure: Often a shorter or bridging term before the main semester.
