University of Birmingham

In recent Complete University Guide (CUG) 2025 rankings, it was 12th in the UK and within the global top 100 being 93rd according to Times Higher Education 2025 rankings. It’s well-known internationally as a research leader and was named “University of the Year” in the UK in 2014. 

Its reputation is bolstered by membership in the Russell Group and Universitas 21, and it attracts high-achieving students and faculty worldwide. A degree from the University of Birmingham is widely respected by employers globally, thanks to this strong reputation. 

Birmingham City University

BCU has a more regional and growing reputation. Nationally, it ranked in the 90s among UK universities  being 92nd in Complete University Guide 2025. Globally, BCU falls in the 801–1000 range of universities under Times Higher Education World Rankings 2025. These rankings reflect its status as a newer university focusing on teaching quality and practical education rather than extensive research output.  

While BCU does not have the same research profile or global rank as University of Birmingham, it has areas of niche excellence (especially in arts) and is well-regarded for student satisfaction and industry employability in many of its programs. Importantly, BCU’s lower ranking reflects its inclusive mission, focusing on access, personalised support, and skill development over research prestige.

Student life at the University of Birmingham 

The University of Birmingham provides a classic campus experience in Edgbaston. The campus is self-contained with beautiful gardens, a mix of historic buildings and modern complexes, sports centers, libraries, labs, dormitories, and the famous clock tower that serves as a gathering point. Student life at Birmingham City University 

By contrast, Birmingham City University’s campus life is integrated with the city. BCU’s main City Centre campus is part of Birmingham’s downtown Eastside district. Facilities like the Curzon Building and Parkside Building are modern and urban, adjacent to the city’s Innovation Birmingham hub and creative quarter.  

BCU students often move between campus buildings and city amenities seamlessly with the Bullring shopping center, restaurants, and entertainment venues all at short walking distance. Despite its urban setting, the university maintains a strong campus community through its Students’ Union (BCUSU), which offers societies, sports clubs, and regular events.  

 BCU also invests in specialised facilities such as the City South campus’ nursing simulation labs and a mock hospital ward for health students.  Beyond health, the conservatoire has world-class music practice and performance spaces. If you study at BCU, you’ll likely enjoy newer buildings and industry-grade equipment (media studios, design workshops, engineering labs) while being in the heart of city life. 

Birmingham as a student city  

Birmingham is a dynamic and affordable city for international students, offering many of the perks of London without the high costs. As the UK’s second-largest city, it features rich cultural diversity with cuisines from around the world, a vibrant arts and music scene, and year-round festivals. With five universities, a large student population, and plenty of student-friendly venues—from nightclubs, music venues, and theaters to cinemas and the iconic Bullring for shopping—there’s always something to do. Key attractions include the Birmingham Museum, Symphony Hall, and nearby Cadbury World.  

Importantly, Birmingham’s central location in England means travel is easy. You can reach London in 1.5 hours by train, and the city has its own international airport for flights around Europe and beyond. 

Student cost of living in Birmingham 

One big advantage is the cost of living: Birmingham offers a more affordable lifestyle compared to London or southern England for students. On average, international students in Birmingham spend around £1,000–£1,200 per month on living expenses (including accommodation, food, transport, etc.). This figure can of course vary with lifestyle, but generally Birmingham’s rents and prices are moderate. For example, student accommodation costs might range from £400 to £800 per month depending on type and location.  

Both universities have on-campus or partnership housing available. University of Birmingham has its own student villages and halls of residence (with prices varying by amenities), and BCU works with private student housing providers for its city campuses.  

Birmingham has excellent public transportation options with buses, trams, and trains. With student discounts available, getting around is convenient and cheap with a monthly transport pass costing roughly £50–£70 for students.
