Ireland is quickly becoming a top destination for domestic and international students from Canada who are looking for a high-quality, internationally recognized university education. There are many reasons for this, from its world-class educational institutions to rich culture. If you are considering making this move, this blog can help you find out more about applying to universities in Ireland, how to choose a program and university, what the application process is like, and more.
If you have questions about the process, book a free consultation with an IDP Canada counsellor.
Domestic and international students from Canada choose to study further in Ireland because, for a start, Irish universities consistently rank well and offer globally recognized degrees. All undergraduate and postgraduate programs are taught in English, which makes the transition easier for students moving from Canada.
Ireland also offers post-graduation work opportunities in the form of two-year stay-back visas for international graduates seeking employment. This depends upon the program, of course, but there are also opportunities for students to gain significant experience in Europe by graduating from an Irish institution.
Finally, Ireland is also famous for its natural beauty, and for being a gateway to European history and art. If these reasons sound compelling, here is what students from Canada need to consider if they intend to study in Ireland.
Start by choosing your program and university. Ireland is home to several prestigious universities including:
National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway)
University College Dublin (UCD)
It always makes sense to explore programs that align with one’s academic interests, of course, but students can also use resources available online to find out more about course content, entry requirements, and application deadlines. All of these can have an impact when it comes to choosing what works best for one’s academic or career goals.
The next step is understanding entry requirements. Domestic students from Canada typically need to have completed a high school diploma with strong academic results. Specific requirements vary by program, and for international students, but key considerations include a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA), prerequisite subjects (especially for science or engineering programs), and proof of English language proficiency (like an IELTS test).
Once you have identified a university and program, you can either begin the application process directly with institutions that allow or require direct applications, or through Ireland’s centralized application system. The Central Applications Office website processes applications for undergraduate courses in Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). You can fill in your course choices and submit relevant documents (transcripts, passport, references, etc.) along with the application fee which is currently €45. Check the website for any changes.
Remember to spend time reading the university’s admission section for exact instructions before you start to prepare supporting documents. These include:
High school transcripts or college transcripts (for postgraduates)
Personal statement or motivation letter
Academic references
Valid passport
Also ensure that all documents are scanned clearly and translated if not originally in English. Once that is done, you can apply for a student visa. Note: Domestic Canadian students do not need a visa for stays under 90 days but need a D Study Visa for full-time study. International students applying from Canada will need a D Study Visa and can apply online at www.irishimmigration.ie.
Here is what you need to apply for a student visa:
Offer letter from a recognized Irish institution
Medical insurance
Once you are done with applying for a program, and are accepted, the important thing to do while waiting for your student visa is plan for accommodation and finances. Most universities in Ireland offer on-campus residences, but off-campus housing is also available. Start looking early, especially in cities where demand is high.
As for finances, speak to an IDP counsellor to find out more about the cost of living, and for information about scholarships for international students offered by individual universities or the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships.
Once you are accepted and your student visa has been approved, it is time to prepare for your move to Ireland. This involves booking your flight and planning your arrival, attending university orientation programs, opening a bank account in Ireland, and registering with immigration upon arrival.
