What Are the Benefits of Studying a Master’s in Australia for Canadian and International Students?

1. Top-ranked schools and programs

Many of the master’s programs in Australia are known for their strengths in research, thought leadership, and impact. Australia’s schools make up over 10% of the top 50 in the world, according to QS World University Rankings 2026. Also, over 1300 of their master’s degrees come from universities that fall in the top 100 in the world.

2. Unique learning environments and experiences

Australia is known for its plant and animal life, and this gives students unique experiences during their degree. For example, Australia’s veterinary programs, due to their diverse wildlife, give students access to unparalleled clinical experience. Australia’s medical programs offer immersive training for students in rural and Indigenous health environments.

3. Diverse and welcoming environment

A third of Australia’s population hail from outside of the country, and there are half a million international students from 190+ countries that come to study in Australia. The culture in Australia is welcoming and diverse, supporting freedom of expression and religious practice, a high standard of living, and the general enjoyment with a more laid-back way of life.

4. Skill and Knowledge preparation for work domestically and overseas

Several programs understand that international students will want to work outside of Australia upon graduation and offer training that satisfies both domestic requirements for practice and licensing and skills requirements outside of the country. For example, the University of Queensland medical program offers this within their studies for students.

5. Early exposure to clinical training

If your program includes clinical training, Canadian students can enjoy exposure to hands-on skill development a year earlier than is typical in Canada. For example, dental programs in Australia offer clinical training immediately in the first year of the program rather than in the second year in Canada.

How Hard Is It to Get PR After Masters in Australia?

Getting Permanent Residency (PR) after a master's degree in Australia depends upon several factors, from the subject and program you study to your overall points, English language proficiency, and pathway chosen. Speaking to a qualified immigration consultant is always recommended. Here are a few things to consider while looking at your options, especially if you choose a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which allows you to stay and gain work experience in Australia for a specific period:

Points: You will need to meet the minimum points requirement for PR, calculated according to various parameters including work experience, English language proficiency, and the kind of master's degree you have completed.

Skilled Occupation List (SOL): Your chosen field of study and future occupation must be on the relevant SOL for a skilled migration visa.

Work experience: You need to show post-study work experience in a relevant field.

The path to PR also involves an assessment of your skills from the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation, and the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI), after which you may receive an invitation to apply for a permanent visa. This will then require you to submit the full PR application with all required documents.
