Completing your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) application may feel like a stressful and overwhelming process, and it can be easy to make small errors given its different components and steps. While errors can cause delays, rejection, or the loss of eligibility, we’re here to help. As provided in the IRCC website, we have put together the top five common PGWP application mistakes and how to avoid them, so you are well-prepared before you apply to get your worker’s permit.

Submitting an Incomplete Application

One of the most frequent errors is failing to provide all the required PGWP documents. Key items, such as a Letter of Completion and final transcript, are often overlooked or submitted with errors. As provided in the IRCC website, these documents are necessary to confirm that you have completed all your program requirements. Without this paperwork, your application will be delayed or rejected.

Pro Tip: Use a PGWP document checklist to make sure you’re not missing any mandatory documents or other requirements. These can include:

  • Proof of completion of your program

  • Proof of enrollment

  • Passport copy

  • Proof of language proficiency

  • Digital photo

  • Additional documents depending on your individual circumstances.

Misjudging Timing and Deadlines

When it comes to your PGWP application, time is of the essence. Since you only have 180 days from your time of graduation to submit your application, it is important to prepare ahead of time to make sure you know the timing of all the essential components before that window opens. This is especially important taking into consideration seasonal surges in applications, which can cause delays.

Pro Tip:

Familiarize yourself with what is required in your PGWP application, as provided in the IRCC website, before you graduate, and your 180-day window opens. Where possible, prepare and ask for documentation ahead of time.

For example, you can get your digital photo, complete your language test, and/or verify your language proficiency level before you apply, so you have one less thing to worry about.

Errors in Personal Information

Mistakes in your personal information—such as your name, date of birth, or passport number—can result in inaccuracies in your application that can cause processing delays. These seemingly minor errors often happen when applicants rush to complete the forms.

Pro Tip:

Double-check every field and cross-reference your information with your official documents. Have a friend or family member take a second look before you submit your application.

Ignoring Study Gaps

If your educational history includes gaps like a leave of absence, a part-time semester, or transferring programs, these must be addressed in your application. Unexplained gaps can raise questions about your eligibility and lead to additional scrutiny or rejection. Be proactive and provide a clear explanation for any interruptions in your studies.

Pro Tip:

Gaps in your studies require a University Acknowledgement Letter. In addition to your University Acknowledgement Letter, you may want to use a Letter of Explanation to clarify your unique circumstances.

Failing to Respond to IRCC Requests

Remember, submitting your application isn’t necessarily the finish line. Once you file your PGWP application with the IRCC, you will need to monitor it on a regular basis in case the IRCC submits any follow-up requests that you need to address like additional information or documents. If you don’t respond in a timely manner, it can lead to an application rejection.

Pro Tip:

If you need extra clarification about your IRCC request, you can fill out a webform or submit a question via your online account.
