As provided in the IRCC website, for international students in Canada, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) enables graduates of designated learning institutions (DLIs) to gain Canadian work experience after finishing their studies, a key advantage when pursuing permanent residency. The length of the PGWP eligibility depends on your study program, but how can you maximize your PGWP duration and how do certain types of programs make an impact? Here’s what you need to know about how PGWP length works, so you can plan ahead and you’re prepared for what to expect with your work permit.
How long your work permit is valid depends on the length of your program. Here’s how you can calculate the PGWP duration you are eligible for, as provided in the IRCC website.
Study Program Length | PGWP Eligibility | PGWP Duration |
---|---|---|
Less than 8 months | No | Not eligible |
8 months to less than 2 years | Yes | Same as program length |
2 years or more | Yes | Up to 3 years |
Two 1-year programs completed consecutively | Yes | Up to 3 years |
Program with distance learning (>50% online) | No (Exception: if your distance learning is due to COVID-19) | Not eligible |
Temporary online learning (COVID-19 exceptions) | Yes (until August 31, 2024) | Based on program length |
Non-DLI institution program to DLI program | Yes, if you have studied for at least 8 months at a DLI | Not eligible |
Transferred between DLIs | Yes (must be studying for at least 8 months) | Based on total program length |
Accelerated program completion | Yes | Based on official program length |
Here are the key rules for determining your PGWP duration:
1. Programs Less Than 8 Months:
Programs shorter than 8 months do not qualify for a PGWP.
Example: A 2-month certificate is not enough for a PGWP. However, a 2-month certificate completed after a 6-month degree does qualify.
2. Programs Between 8 Months and Less Than 2 Years:
The PGWP is issued for the same length as the study program.
Example: A 10-month diploma earns a 10-month PGWP.
3. Programs of 2 Years or More:
Graduates of these programs can receive a PGWP valid for up to 3 years.
Example: Graduates of 2-year master’s degrees are automatically qualified for a 3-year PGWP.
4. Combining Multiple Programs:
If you complete multiple programs, their combined duration will make you eligible for a longer PGWP duration.
Example: Two consecutive 1-year programs may result in up to a 3-year PGWP.

As provided in the IRCC website, when it comes to your PGWP, it’s good to think ahead. As you plan your studies, here are some tips for getting the maximum possible duration for your work permit.
1. Enroll in 2-Year Programs:
Choose a program that is at least 2 years in length so you can qualify for a 3-year PGWP.
2. Minimize Gaps Between Consecutive Studies:
If you decide to pursue shorter programs, don’t allow for a long gap between them. You must apply for your next program within 2 years of completing the first to meet eligibility criteria. To get a longer PGWP, try to make sure they total at least 2 years.
3. Check DLI and Program Eligibility:
Check that the institution and program are recognized by The Government of Canada’s Designated Learning Institution (DLI) list before you enrol. Otherwise, your time studying will not be eligible for a permit.
4. Avoid Online Studies:
Virtual or distance learning components may affect PGWP eligibility, especially if it accounts for more than 50% of your studies. Confirm your program’s compliance with current rules.
5. Account for Accelerated Studies:
Completing a program faster than its official duration does not reduce PGWP validity. Its official duration will still determine your PGWP eligibility. For example, if you complete a 2 year program in 1 year, you will be eligible for a permit 2 years in length.
6. Apply Promptly Within Your 180 Day Window:
Submit your PGWP application as soon as possible once your 180 day window opens. Think ahead and plan in advance for your required PGWP documents such as your final transcript and completion letter.
How long does a PGWP last?
As provided in the IRCC website, a PGWP can last between 8 months and to a maximum of 3 years. Typically, this is determined by how long your study program is. The exception to this rule is if you’re a graduate from a master’s program.
How do I get a 3 year PGWP?
Complete a program that is at least 2 years long, or combine multiple programs totalling 2 years.
As of February 15, 2024, graduates of masters programs who have studied for a minimum of 8 months but less than 2 years total may be eligible for a 3 year PGWP. See the IRCC’s page for more information.
How long do you have to apply for PGWP after graduation?
You have 180 days to apply for a PGWP after completing your program.
Will PGWP be extended in the coming years?
Typically, a PGWP will only be extended if you’ve been notified by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). While there are exceptions to this rule and ways to extend through other pathways, it’s important to keep in mind that your work permit is a one-time opportunity that’s usually only 3 years in length. For formal announcements, stay updated through the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) PGWP website.
Maximizing your PGWP duration is the best way to make the most of this opportunity, so you can start off on the right foot for a future here in Canada. Whether you’re selecting a program, planning consecutive studies, or graduating in the near future, knowing the ways your program length impacts your PGWP can help prepare you for the road ahead. We hope this guide has helped give you the confidence to take control of your academic and professional journey, so you can make the most of every opportunity that your PGWP presents and build your dream life in Canada.
