For many international students, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a critical step to building a career and life in Canada. However, not all programs offer the same pathway to a PGWP, and shorter programs come with unique considerations. As provided in the IRCC website, here’s what you need to keep in mind when determining the impact of shorter studies on your PGWP duration.

Eligibility for Shorter Programs

In order for your program of study to qualify for the PGWP, it must meet the following criteria:

How is PGWP Duration Determined for Shorter Programs?

Special Considerations for Shorter Programs

1. Online/Distance Learning: As of September 2022, portions of your program completed online from outside Canada are excluded from PGWP calculations. For studies within Canada, you must complete at least 50% of your program in person.

  • Exception: Time studied online at an PGWP-eligible DLI between March 2020 - August 31, 2022 are valid towards your PGWP.

2. Language Proficiency: Starting November 2024, all applicants must meet new language proficiency requirements for PGWP eligibility. Refer to the IRCC’s chart to determine your language level according to your test results.

The English or French language requirements are:

  • English: CELPIP (General), IELTS (General Training), or PTE Core.

  • French: TEF Canada or TCF Canada.

3. Field of Study Requirement:

If you graduated from any other program besides a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctoral degree from a university, you must meet new field of study requirements associated with long-term employment shortages. This applies for any PGWP applications submitted or created on or after November 1, 2024.

These fields of study include:

  • Agriculture and agri-food

  • Education*

  • Healthcare

  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

  • Trade

  • Transport

*As of December 17, 2024, these field of study requirements also extend to some Early Childhood Education and Developmental Service programs.

Tips for Getting Your PGWP for Shorter Programs

  • Combine Eligible Programs: Remember, you can only apply once for your PGWP, with a validity of up to 3 years. If you plan to pursue further studies, in Canada align your programs strategically to maximize your PGWP duration. Make sure that they meet the field of study requirements where applicable.

  • Plan Ahead: Understand the required documents for your PGWP application and plan ahead. Ensure you apply within 180 days of receiving your program completion letter.

  • Work with Advisors: Consult with an academic advisor or immigration consultant that can help you with each step of your application, so you’re maximizing the full duration potential of your PGWP.
