Why Study Nursing in Australia?

1. Ranked among highest-paying nurses in world

Australian nurses receive some of the highest salaries in the world, outranking Canada at over $77K USD. Plus, several roles in nursing are on the Australian Skilled Occupations list, which signals strong opportunities for career growth and advancement after graduation.

2. High demand for nurses until 2035

According to the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, there is projected to be an undersupply of over 70K nurses by 2035 with nearly 80K nurses required to address this shortage. As of now, supply cannot keep up with demand. This means upon graduation, you can expect job security and wide options for employment. And, as mentioned, nursing roles fall under the Australian Government’s Skilled Occupation List, which is a list of roles experiencing shortages that are eligible for several visa pathways.

3. Laid back lifestyle to support nursing career and studies

Australia is known for its strong standard of living and laid-back lifestyle, which is especially helpful as you complete your nursing degree. After graduation, nurses in Australia typically complete shifts around the 8-hour mark, in comparison with nurses in Canada who often work up to 12 hours per shift.

4. Globally top-ranked nursing programs in Australia for international students

Nearly 10% of Australia’s nursing programs rank in the top 50 in the world, according to QS World University Rankings, making it an ideal place to earn your nursing degree as an international student. Several universities, like Queensland University of Technology, also offer the opportunity to receive clinical training opportunities overseas in developing or developed countries as well as the ability to take courses in Aboriginal Health, such as at the University of Adelaide.

Nursing Pathways for Canadians and International Students

Undergraduate Pathway - Bachelor’s of Nursing

If you are applying directly from high school, a Bachelor of Nursing is an ideal option for you and will allow you to practice as a nurse in Australia upon completing 3-4 years of study. Students will get the opportunity to work in a wide range of clinical settings that can include remote and rural areas, as well as the ability to hone their skills in specializations such as mental health, acute health, and pediatric nursing.

Graduate Pathway - Master of Nursing

Ideal for students who already have an undergraduate degree in another field but are interested in becoming a nurse. A Master’s in Nursing will take around 2 years to complete and also includes clinical hours and gives you skill development and training necessary for roles such as a Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Educator, both of which are on the Skilled Occupations List. This degree also advances your opportunity for higher pay in Australia.

Accelerated Nursing Programs in Australia for international students

These programs allow students to complete their nursing degree in 2 years for quicker entry into full-time work. Some programs require the completion of a previous undergraduate degree or at least 0.5 years of completion of a higher education degree, but this can vary from school to school. Requirements to Study Nursing in Australia

Paragraph Image

Academic admission requirements

Undergraduate

Postgraduate

  • Undergraduate degree.

Entry to practice degrees will require an undergraduate degree in any field, while advanced degrees will require an undergraduate degree specifically in nursing as well as relevant work experience (1-2 years). This will vary depending on the program and school. Check the eligibility requirements for your degree for more information.

English test requirements

  • IELTS: Minimum 7.0 overall with no score under 6.0 or 7.0 (depends on program and school).

  • PTE: Overall score of minimum 66

  • TOEFL: Overall score of around 94

Admission tests

Bachelor’s degree: Typically no admission test or entry nursing exam in Australia, but you may need to complete the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) depending on the school and your academic prerequisites. See your program page for more information.

Postgraduate degree: No admission test necessary, but you may be required to show proof of work experience, your nursing registration in Australia as an AHPRA nurse, depending on your entry point (entry to practice or advanced). Refer to your program page for specific information.

How to Apply for Nursing Programs in Australia (Step-by-Step)

1. Select your schools and programs

Using your academic history and your career goals, select the best nursing program for you based on their specialization, placement opportunities, and your special interests. For example, you may choose one program due to their course offerings and opportunities to practice within Aboriginal Health. Different criteria for your shortlist may also include international scholarship opportunities, costs, international student numbers and support, and location.

2. Gather important documentation

The documentation required for your nursing program will differ depending on your degree level, the school, and your pathway of entry (entry to practice vs advanced for postgraduate). However, some common documents you should include are:

  • Transcripts. Include a printout or digital copy of your grade history and courses completed. Ensure you meet minimum requirements based on your degree level and course.

  • Letters of recommendation. These help provide qualified evidence of your academic strengths, your accomplishments, and your soft skills. You may consider past teachers or, if you are applying to an advanced postgraduate entry degree, past supervisors, or coworkers. Request these at least 1-2 months in advance.

  • English test results. This provides proof of your English language proficiency to ensure you meet the minimum requirements for study and practice once you graduate. The exact scores necessary in each section may differ from school to school, so be sure to check this before you submit your application.

  • Personal statement. Provide context and quantify your accomplishments in this personal statement that lets you describe your career goals and the impact you’d like to have in the field. Explain how your experience and who you are makes you a great fit for the program.

  • CV or resume. As an applicant to the postgraduate advanced entry nursing degrees, you will be required to show proof of 1-2 years of work experience. Your CV should highlight your accomplishments that reflect both your strengths as a nurse and your career goals that fit in with the program you’re applying for.

Please note, this is not an exhaustive list and it’s always in your best interest to consult against the specific document requirements on your program page.

Practicing Nursing in Canada After an Australian Degree

If you intend to practice nursing in Canada with an Australian degree, your credentials must first be evaluated by the nursing regulatory body in the province where you want to work. This process begins with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), a Canadian non-profit organization responsible for credential assessments for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) interested in practicing in Canada.

If your degree is deemed equivalent, you will need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam, a standardized exam required for nursing graduates to become licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Canada. You can then apply for licensure with the specific provincial body. You may also need to meet English language proficiency requirements and complete additional education or experience deemed necessary by the regulatory body.

Here's a step-by-step guide to what you have to do to start practicing in Canada:

Assessment of credentials

  • Submit educational and registration documents to the NNAS for an assessment

  • The NNAS will forward your application to the provincial regulatory body for evaluation.

  • Your Australian degree will be assessed to determine if it is equivalent to a Canadian nursing program.

Complete required exams

  • NCLEX-RN: If your credentials are found to be equivalent, you are eligible to write the NCLEX-RN, the national licensing exam for registered nurses

  • Language proficiency: You may need to demonstrate English or French language proficiency through a test like IELTS.

Register with your province

  • Apply for licensure with the regulatory body in your specific province. The provincial body will review your NNAS report and NCLEX-RN results. It may ask you to complete additional courses, clinical hours, or a bridging program before you can be licensed.
