'It's Natural to be Scared About Making the Move, but Choosing Australia is Worth It'

When it comes to academia, there appears to be a lot happening Down Under. Domestic as well as international students have been moving to Australian universities, drawn not just by their rankings and research opportunities, but the great weather and post-graduate opportunities.

We have been speaking with Canadian students who made the move, as well as international students who came to Canada, studied here, and then decided to study further in Australia.

Meet Abhishek Sharma, originally from Delhi, a place he refers to as ‘the City of Hearts.’ After a bachelor's in computer science from The NorthCap University in Gurgaon, he moved to Canada to pursue a postgraduate certificate in business analytics. On completing the program and gaining some work experience, he applied for a master’s in Australia and will be moving there shortly.

Abhishek says he has always believed in continuous learning and exploring new opportunities. Studying in different countries has helped him grow professionally and personally, and he is excited about new experiences in Australia. We asked him about his journey so far, and what advice he had for students like him. Here are his responses:

Why did you decide to move from Canada to Australia? What will you be studying there?

I studied for a postgraduate certificate in business analytics in Canada and wanted to take the next step by completing a master’s degree. I will be studying for an MS in Data Science at the University of South Australia. I chose it because I have always wanted to travel there, and this feels like the right time. My cousin lives in Melbourne and used to send me beautiful pictures of the beaches and the city. I always wondered when I would get a chance to visit those places.

What made you choose this university and program?

I chose the program because it aligns perfectly with my long-term goal of becoming a data scientist. Data science is a vast field that requires rigorous training and genuine interest to master, and I believe pursuing a master’s degree is the right way forward. I carefully reviewed the course curriculum, compared options in different cities, and decided on this university because it is set to become the largest in Australia. Plus, my cousin studied there and landed a great job in Melbourne, which gave me confidence in the university’s reputation.

What sort of research did you do before applying?

I did some research on my own, but most of the detailed work was smoothly handled by my IDP counsellor in Canada. After an initial phone conversation, he shortlisted some universities for me. I chose this one based on its ranking, curriculum, and overall fit for my goals.

What was working with an IDP counsellor like? How did it help you?

In one word — excellent. My counsellor guided me like an elder brother and patiently answered all my questions. Initially, I knew nothing about the Australian study visa process and felt nervous. But after speaking with him, I felt I was in good hands and didn’t need to stress about the paperwork. He took care of everything and did it beautifully.

Do you have any advice for other international students from Canada who are thinking about studying in Australia?

If you are thinking about it, just do it. It is natural to be sceptical or scared because it is expensive and feels like starting over. But in the end, it is worth it. Australia is like Canada’s cousin — same language, same British heritage and, funnily enough for me, similar flight durations back home (around 13 hours). So, you won’t feel a huge difference except for the weather, which is much more pleasant in Australia!

What was the nicest thing about studying in Canada, and the hardest thing?

The hardest part is adjusting to life without family, especially dealing with roommates. Pro tip: your roommate can either make or break your experience. Be very careful when choosing one. The nicest thing? Canadian hospitality and culture. Simple gestures like holding doors for others and exchanging warm courtesies. I am proud to say I will carry these habits with me wherever I go.
