We have been reaching out to international students with questions about studying abroad: What motivated them to do it, what were the challenges they faced, and what they would like other students to keep in mind before starting out on their own journeys. Our guest this time is a Canadian student who chose to move Down Under.
Kiran Narwal is studying for her Juris Doctor of Law at Bond University on Australia’s Gold Coast. Originally from Pitt Meadows, a small town just outside Vancouver, she completed her bachelor’s degree at Simon Fraser University and, before moving to Bond University, worked as a legal assistant at a family law firm. She says it is where she discovered her passion for law and realized she wanted to make a real difference, especially in the lives of children and women facing difficult circumstances.
Kiran’s career goal is to practice family law, with a particular focus on advocating for children in custody battles and supporting South Asian women who remain in difficult marriages due to financial illiteracy or lack of access to resources. She says she has been sharpening her legal skills at Bond University through negotiation competitions, client interviews, and real-world internships, including one at a law firm in Southport that has already offered her a position after graduation.
There are many reasons why international students choose Bond University. For one, according to the 2025 Good Universities Guide, it offers Australia's smallest class sizes, ensuring that students will never get lost in the crowd. According to the 2023-2026 QS Star ratings, Bond achieved a rating of five stars across several categories, including teaching, employability, academic development, internationalisation, facilities, and inclusiveness.
“Bond University has been the perfect blend of academic challenge and personal growth,” says Kiran. “I have made lifelong friendships, built a strong legal foundation, and found a new home. Although I have travelled to several countries, there truly is no place like Australia, and I am so grateful to be here.”
Here are her responses to some of our other questions about her new life in Australia.
It has always been a dream of mine to live in another country, and Australia stood out for so many reasons. Bond’s accelerated JD program caught my attention, and the Canadian specialization made it feel like the perfect fit for someone with my background. I wanted to challenge myself, grow both personally and professionally, and experience life on the other side of the world.
So many reasons! The accelerated program, strong Canadian community, and the fact that Bond consistently ranks #1 for student experience all played a big role. But what really sealed the deal was how personal and welcoming the experience was from the very beginning. I had Natasha Racco, Bond’s Regional Manager, personally reach out to me. She called me multiple times, answered all my questions, and even gave me a virtual campus tour. I felt like Bond truly cared about me before I had even accepted my offer.
Find out why Bond University's law program has earned a strong reputation in Canada.
I did a ton of research—both about Bond University and life in Australia in general. I read online reviews, student testimonials, and watched videos. Everything I found painted a picture of a supportive, high-quality law school experience, and the more I learned, the more excited I became.
Yes! I spoke to advisors from the Office of Future Students at Bond University, who provided amazing guidance. I also had the chance to connect with current students who shared honest insights about their experiences. That helped me feel confident in my decision.
Being far from family was definitely a challenge. But thankfully, Bond’s trimester schedule means I get three breaks a year, so there is time to travel home if needed. Another adjustment was driving on the opposite side of the road, but that has become easier over time. Also, things like walking on the left side of the footpath or standing on the left side of escalators—they seem small, but they take getting used to! And of course, the seasons are flipped, which is wild but kind of fun too.
Studying in Australia has helped me grow personally and professionally. I have become more independent, open-minded, and confident. The legal opportunities here are amazing too. I am currently interning at a firm in Southport, and they have already offered me a job after graduation. That experience has shaped my career path and made me consider staying in Australia to work as a solicitor.
Do it! It is honestly the best decision I have ever made. Moving halfway across the world sounds scary, but it is an incredible opportunity to grow, learn, and make lifelong memories. I have met people from all over the world, gained invaluable experiences, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
There is so much to love! The campus amenities are amazing, from the gym to the library, to the psychological services that support student wellness. The teaching staff are genuinely passionate, and the environment feels collaborative and uplifting. It’s not just about academics; it is about community.
