Do DSE candidates need to take the IELTS English test?

When applying to overseas universities, students must not only meet the academic requirements of their chosen institution but also provide proof of English Proficiency, such as internationally recognised English test result (e.g., IELTS). Depending on the university and programme applied for, the IELTS test type (Academic or General Training ) and required overall band score may differ.

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) candidates should note that while some overseas universities accept DSE English Language results as proof of proficiency, most English-speaking destinations (e.g., the UK, Australia, Canada) require applicants to submit scores from standardised English tests. Among these, IELTS is the most widely accepted test.

The table below shows the conversion between DSE English Language levels and the corresponding IELTS band scores, based on data from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA).

Which IELTS test should I take?

IELTS offers IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The IELTS test you take – and the score you need – will depend on both the requirements of your visa, the organisation and where you plan to study. If you are planning to study in the UK, you may need to take IELTS for UKVI to meet relevant visa requirements. >>>Prepare for your IELTS test
