- Satisfactory academic standing
- Registered in a graduate program in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation, the Faculty of Law or the Department of Sociology
- Selection based on academic achievement as it relates to gender, sexuality, disability and or accessibility
- Selection based on demonstrated scholarly commitment to critical understandings demonstrated commitment to extending scholarly work into the public domain and demonstrated advocacy on campus or within the community
- This award celebrates the memory of Lane Mandlis, who earned four degrees at the University of Alberta: A Bachelor of Physical Education and a Master of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation, a PhD in Sociology, and a Juris Doctor in Law.
- Lane's intellectual and advocacy work were focused on disability rights and disrupting normative approaches to gender-in particular the intersection between psychiatry, law and citizenship in the transgender body.
