The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) offers international students more than a degree. Here, students gain real professional experience, develop leadership skills, and immerse themselves in the energy, culture, and opportunities of the New York metropolitan area, a growing center for technology and business innovation.
Founded in 1881 and located in downtown Newark, New Jersey, NJIT's 45-acre urban campus is just 20 minutes from Manhattan. This gives students unmatched access to internships, professional networks, and cultural experiences in both Newark and New York City.
The region offers more than just world-class academics. Students enjoy concerts, museums, global cuisine, and vibrant neighborhoods, all while building connections that last a lifetime.
With over 12,000 students from 79 countries, NJIT is recognized as an R1 research university, investing nearly USD 200 million annually in innovation and discovery across interdisciplinary clusters such as bioscience and bioengineering, data science and management, environment and sustainability, material science and engineering, and robotics and machine intelligence.
The university is consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities and top 100 national universities in the United States (U.S. News & World Report). It is also the #1 public university for upward economic mobility (Forbes, The New York Times).
NJIT prepares graduates for real-world impact through hands-on learning, paid professional experience, and close partnerships with industry. International students are supported every step of the way, from academic advising to immigration support, ensuring they are prepared not just for their first job, but for leadership in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
With a vibrant, multicultural campus and a commitment to student success, NJIT opens doors to achievement, opportunity, and lifelong growth.
At NJIT, students benefit from small, engaging classes that foster direct connections with faculty and peers. The average class size is just 25 students, with laboratory sections often even smaller.
It's rare for a class to exceed 40 students, ensuring that students are never lost in the crowd. NJIT's student-faculty ratio is 15:1, so professors know their students by name and take an active role in mentoring and career development.
From the first year, both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate in research and hands-on projects. Whether interested in artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, sustainable design, or data science, students will find opportunities to work alongside faculty on meaningful, real-world challenges.
Many students join research teams, contribute to published studies, or take part in industry-sponsored projects early in their academic careers.
NJIT's faculty are leading researchers and innovators in their fields, who bring this real-world expertise directly into the classroom. They routinely secure major grants, collaborate with industry partners, and introduce students to the latest technologies and discoveries through their teaching and lab work.
Beyond the classroom, NJIT's strong co-op and internship programs connect students to top employers in the New York metropolitan area and beyond. Students alternate semesters of academic study with semesters of paid, professional experience, often turning these positions into full-time job offers after graduation.
In short, NJIT's intentionally small classes, hands-on research, dedicated faculty, and robust co-op opportunities all come together to help students build valuable skills, meaningful relationships, and a strong foundation for their future career.
NJIT offers over 128 degree programs across six specialized schools and colleges:

Financing a degree program can be a concern for international students, and NJIT provides a variety of different funding packages to ensure the financial security of its student community. There are a number of private loans and scholarships available to students of various eligibility requirements, including many which are available to international students.
This includes merit-based scholarships for international students, with automatic consideration once students are admitted. Students admitted to the Albert Dorman Honors College are also considered for additional scholarships.
The Graduate Provost's Scholarship for master's students grants up to USD 10,000 per year, based on students' academic achievements. Again, eligible candidates will be automatically considered. Select master's and PhD programs will also offer graduate assistantships and fellowships.
Tuition and living costs are competitive for the New York area, and students typically enjoy excellent return on investment once they complete their studies.
International students can also apply for on-campus employment for up to 20 hours per week during semester times, to supplement their finances.
NJIT provides international students with the benefit of studying in beautiful surroundings with a wide range of excellent facilities for both study and leisure.
The Campus Center offers a range of purpose-designed spaces for work, refreshment, socialising, and recreation.
Students will benefit from advanced STEM research labs and centers, along with the NJIT Makerspace – one of the largest campus-based fabrication facilities in the whole U.S.
The campus is served by two libraries, the Van Houten Library and the Barbara and Leonard Littman Library for Architecture. Each building is a state-of-the-art research center, fully furnished with reference materials, publications, information databases, fast wireless internet, and serviced by knowledgeable and helpful staff members.
Everyone is able to participate in sports at NJIT. Varsity, club and intramural sports are open in the likes of soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball and judo, so there is room for participation for everyone and superb sporting facilities to utilize.
These facilities include the Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center, complete with a gym, fitness center, swimming pool, health center and racquetball courts. The men's and women's NCAA Division 1 soccer teams play at the recently renovated Lubetkin Field, which doubles up as a venue for physical education classes and intramural sports. Right next to the Campus Center is a peaceful green, which is often used for games such as frisbee.
A 425-seat Jim Wise Theatre caters to the needs of the more artistic students, hosting two student productions each year. There is a Jim Wise Scholarship available to those who participate in those productions, which feature many students taking the minor in theatre available in the Department of Humanities.
NJIT stands out for its national rankings and commitment to student success. The university is ranked #1 in the United States for student upward mobility (Forbes, The New York Times), is among the top 2 percent nationally for return on investment (PayScale), and is recognized as a top 50 public school for 2025 by U.S. News & World Report.
Campus facilities continue to expand, featuring new residence halls, advanced STEM centers, and a state-of-the-art wellness and events center.
For international applicants, NJIT now grants English proficiency waivers to students from an expanded list of countries, as well as to those who have completed internationally recognized English curricula such as the IB, Cambridge, or Advanced Placement (AP) programs.
Nearly all engineering, computing, and science programs at NJIT are STEM-designated, which allows international graduates to apply for up to three years of employment authorization in the United States (twelve months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) plus a 24-month STEM extension) offering extended professional experience after graduation.
NJIT Career Development Services is nationally recognized, with The Princeton Review ranking NJIT #11 in the nation for best career placement among public universities in 2024. Nearly 95 percent of recent graduates secure full-time employment or pursue further education within six months of graduation, with starting salaries that exceed national averages.
