Master of Arts in Journalism

The MA in Journalism program merges fundamentals of journalism with training in cutting-edge digital tools and techniques. A top-50 research university, Northeastern offers a distinctive blend of intellectual rigor and experiential education, most notably through our renowned cooperative education, or “co-op,” program, which students come from around the world to access.The MA in Journalism combines courses in the fundamentals of news and feature writing with a grounding in digital skills. Students come to the program from a variety of backgrounds. In small, nurturing classes, students begin introductory journalism courses and move on to advanced courses in investigative journalism, digital fundamentals and magazine writing.Based in Boston, with its vibrant media and technology scene, the MA in Journalism program offers students the opportunity to gain real world experience in newsrooms in the city and across the country through Northeastern’s Cooperative Education, or co-op, program. Our students study with award-winning faculty who have come to Northeastern with years of experience. With their guidance, students regularly publish their work with local and national news outlets. They also take advantage of opportunities to collaborate with our faculty on cutting-edge research that has real world impact.Learning OutcomesDescribe, analyze, and critique the role of Journalism in a democracy (1st Amendment).Gather and use data for reporting & analysis.Collaborate with other news professionals in writing & production of news.Report & produce a story across a range of media.Identify patterns in media innovation & the evolving business dynamics of Journalism.Write focused, organized, literate, and accurate narratives using AP Style; when appropriate.Critically analyze visual information.Understand and apply ethical standards of Journalism.

Enrolling graduate and professional program students are required to submit to Northeastern University (NU) their official transcripts including evidence of the completion of the bachelor\u2019s degree and the date of degree conferral within 30 days from the start of their first academic term.
