The Doctor of Nursing Practice with a Forensic Nursing Leadership emphasis prepares advanced nursing professionals for leadership and specialized practice in forensic nursing. The program combines advanced nursing practice, organizational leadership, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient safety, epidemiology, health determinants, research interpretation, and practice scholarship with specialized forensic nursing education. Students explore the philosophy and principles of forensic nursing in acute care and community settings, the roles of forensic science professionals and advanced practice forensic nurses, and theoretical models from nursing, related sciences, and law to develop frameworks for forensic nursing leadership. The program includes clinical therapeutics, assessment tools, diagnosis, treatment, and management of forensic consultations based on the best available evidence. Students gain experience in program development, leadership, policy, and the interaction between nursing and the criminal justice system, while also examining ethical challenges in advanced forensic nursing practice. Clinical practicum experiences prepare students to provide direct health care services to forensic patients and families across the lifespan and to synthesize contemporary clinical knowledge for assessment and management of forensic populations. The program also includes a DNP Scholarly Project, through which students identify a practice-focused problem, conduct an integrated review of the literature, design an appropriate project or intervention, gather and analyze data, evaluate results, and disseminate findings to a targeted audience. Students may also select coursework in areas such as Forensic Social Work, Vulnerable Populations, and Health Policy, providing additional perspectives on legal systems, health disparities, policy development, advocacy, and the needs of vulnerable populations.
